Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site

GHOSTS AND LEGENDS OF HOFWYL-BROADFIELD PLANTATION: JULY 3, 2019 – JULY 6, 2019

Take an eerie journey back in time at Coastal Georgia’s most haunted rice plantation as Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site offers Ghosts and Legends walking tours of the site. Walk beneath centuries-old Live Oak trees, explore the plantation out-buildings and finish with a lantern tour of the plantation house.

As you stroll through Hofwyl-Broadfield’s moss laden trees hear the stories of five generations of plantation owners and the African-Americans who worked there, in both slavery and freedom. The Big Photo Show

COASTAL PHOTOGRAPHERS GUILD’S 11th ANNUAL “BIG PHOTO SHOW”: JUNE 25, 2019 – AUGUST 3, 2019

The opening reception for the show is Thursday, June 27 from 5:00-7:00PM at Glynn Visual Arts (GVA). Guests at the reception can vote for their favorite photos in the “People’s Choice” category. The award presentation will be at 6:15PM. Refreshments will be served. The exhibit is free, and the public is welcome.

This is the largest photography exhibit in the region and will feature prints presented by members of the Guild which includes award winning photographers, beginners, serious amateurs. Photographs will be grouped into four categories: (1) Nature; (2) People (including portraits); (3) Landscape; and (4) Open. Monday is for the mommies. We’re here to support you with a cup of coffee, a craft & story for the kids, and a place to socialize with other moms. The Tinted Tide will host Mommy Monday starting at 11 AM on March 25th, and you are invited to join us! This is a low-cost event at only $15 per family (1 adult, 1-2 kids). Coffee for moms & crafts for the kids are fully provided (all ages welcome). Wear your comfiest yoga pants and put that hair up in a messy bun, because this one’s for you!

OLD FASHIONED 4TH OF JULY: JULY 4, 2019

This Fourth of July, bring yourself, your family and friends and join thousands of happy kids and adults for free games, free watermelon, and of course free fireworks at Mary Ross Waterfront Park in the heart of Historic Downtown Brunswick.

The festivities start at 7:00 p.m. (ends at 9:30 p.m.) and feature organized and supervised classic games like sack races, tug-of-wars, horseshoes, various ball games, hula-hoop contests and more. Players compete for prizes of delicious whole South Georgia watermelons. Can’t win or just don’t want to play but you still have a taste for watermelon? Free slices are handed out all evening, compliments of the City of Brunswick.

The fireworks over the waters of the East River and Oglethorpe Bay start about 9:00 p.m. and last 30 minutes. A great, fun, family event that’s sponsored each year by The City of Brunswick, Golden Isles Arts and Humanities Association, and the Downtown Development Authority.

SUNSHINE FESTIVAL (5k, shopping, fireworks, music + more): JULY 4, 2019 – JULY 7, 2019

Celebrate the 4th of July on St. Simons Island! This multi-day festival is the perfect way to celebrate Independence Day on the Georgia coast. Complete with an arts & crafts show, 5K race and fireworks, everyone is sure to have a good time!

The Sunshine Festival Race will take place Wednesday, July 4th. The 5K race starts at 7:00am, and the 1 mile fun run starts at 8:00am. Race and award ceremony will take place at Mallery Park (601 Mallery Street). For more information about the race, click here.

The golf cart parade will begin at 2:30pm – Mallery Park.

Enjoy the sounds of the Traveling Riverside Band from 6 pm – 9 pm and 9:30 pm – 10:15 pm

Junior Ranger programJUNIOR RANGER DAYS AT HOFWYL-BROADFIELD PLANTATION: JULY 6, 2019

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site’s Junior Ranger program is a great way for kids age 6–12 to have fun and learn more about Georgia’s special natural and historical resources. On select Saturday mornings throughout the summer from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. a ranger will guide participants through sections of Hofwyl’s new Junior Ranger book. Those completing all sections of the book will receive a Junior Ranger badge.

Participants will learn about rice growth at Hofwyl, the ante-bellum plantation house, trees, marshes and many other aspects of our areas natural and cultural heritage. Regular admission: $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for youth (6 to 17).

Village Creek LandingFLY FISHING AT VILLAGE CREEK LANDING: JULY 9, 2019

2nd Tuesday of each month On the Fly has partnered with Village Creek Landing on St. Simons Island to host a monthly Casting Demo/Clinic + Fly Tying Lessons. Casting Demo from 5-6pm from a different fly rod manufacturer each month followed by Fly Tying from 6-8pm inside at Village Creek Landing. Enjoy the view, some brew and professional fly tying instruction from some of our favorite local fly tyers. Learn the local fly patterns that work.

COST: $50/person includes fly tying materials, first drink and use of OTF vises (but, you are encouraged to bring your own tying vises), $4 for each additional drink (beer/wine) via Raffle Ticket purchase for cool fly fishing gear and swag. The Literary Guild of St. Simons Island Film Series presents Becoming Astrid, Sweden/Denmark, 2018, directed by Pernille Fischer Christensen. This fascinating bio-picture centers on the creative and unconventional Swedish children’s book writer Astrid Lindgren, who wrote Pippi Longstocking.  This film about an exemplary woman, made by women, is as much a pleasure as it is a lesson.  Not rated; in Swedish and Danish with English subtitles; 120 minutes.

Cerama-Glass ClassCERAMA-GLASS CLASS: JULY 13, 2019

This cerama-glass class is the first of it’s kind! It yields gorgeous results in a unique bowl that you can keep or gift. This nature inspired piece consists of a handmade ceramic bowl that you will paint in the studio, then decorate with a layer of our fused glass. The glass melts into a crackling design to create a gorgeous, shimmering surface at the bottom of the bowl. This organic-ware bowl is approximately the size of a cereal bowl. Each bowl that you make will be created from your own color choice of glass and glaze, to fit your space just right! The cost is $32 per reservation.

Little Light Music Concert SeriesA LITTLE LIGHT MUSIC FEATURING THE FUNK BROTHERHOOD: JULY 14, 2019

The Funk Brotherhood from Athens, GA will be performing. From the horn-driven hits of Kool & the Gang, to the chart-topping vocals of Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, The Funk Brotherhood does not disappoint with its high-energy performance. Comprised of up to 9 dynamic musicians – all veteran performers with years of live performance skill – The Funk Brotherhood features a groove-inspiring rhythm section comprised of drums, bass, guitar and keys. Add to this a 3 piece horn section along with tight vocal harmonies and you’ve got the perfect blend to deliver hit after hit and keep your guests up and moving to the beat all night long.

Fused Glass Lantern ClassFUSED GLASS LANTERN CLASS: JULY 20, 2019

At this class you’ll get to create a unique lantern panel by personalizing it with fused glass. As always, our glass classes are instructed to provide you with the steps necessary for your design to come to life! The only thing you’ll need to bring is your imagination (along with food and beverages if you’d like). As a bonus feature, the panels are interchangeable for different seasons and occasions. Once you’ve attended a class you can return and create more panels for your lantern!

Starlight and Spartina- An Evening Under The Oaks: Saturday, March 7th from 4-8pm- Enjoy a fun evening under the oaks at Musgrove Plantation on St. Simons Island while supporting Coastal WildScapes. End of Summer Arts & Crafts Show: Saturday & Sunday, August 23rd & 24th from 10am to 5pm at Postell Park on St. Simons Island. Arts and crafts vendors from around the Southeast will be selling their hand made pottery, paintings, jewelry, art and much more!

St. Simons Island July 4th Sunshine Festival: Friday, July 4th- Sunday, July 6th 10AM to 5PM- An island tradition for over 60 years, the sunshine festival is a great way to celebrate the 4th! Located in the pier village, the festival features arts & crafts vendors selling pottery, paintings, photography and jewelry! The festival also has children’s activities, live music, a golf cart parade, family movies and of course, fireworks on the 4th!

The 24th Annual Golden Isles Family Fishing Event: Saturday, June 7th from 8:30am to 12pm- Bring the family out to the Sidney Lanier Fishing Pier for a morning of fishing and family fun! There will be free food and free rods and tackle boxes for all participants! The event is free of charge for the first 125 registered children ages 5-12. Reelin’ In A Cure Tripletail Tournament: Saturday, May 10th- This popular American Cancer Society benefit takes place at Morningstar Marina. The cost to participate in the fishing tournament is $100 per person. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest fish and the most fish. Following the tournament, there will be a party with live music beginning at 5pm. Tickets to the party are sold separately and are $35 per person or $65 per couple.
