22LimeRickBurn

EVENING LIME RICK BURN AND CANDLE LIGHT TOUR: NOVEMBER 17, 2018 – JANUARY 6, 2019

St. Simons Island, GA: Fort Frederica’s bleaching ruins dot the landscape where a thriving town stood. A place that was home to roughly 1,000 people is now largely quiet. The site remains difficult to comprehend; its stories shrouded in a mysterious history.

The burning of a lime rick will be the backdrop for an evening of storytelling and history. A lime rick of stacked logs with racks of oyster shells will be fired. The heat of the fire breaks down the shell into lime. This source of lime allowed Frederica’s settlers to build tabby homes that were so durable that ruins still remain. (Burning of the rick will depend on weather conditions)

Starting at 6:00 pm visitors should meet in the Visitor Center breezeway, where a short tabby making demonstration will take place, followed by the lighting of the lime rick and the candle light tour.

The candle lit tour features the stories of settlers and soldiers. Soldiers from the 42nd Regiment of Foot will demonstrate their military skills. Musket and cannon firings will highlight the stories of the fight for British rights to Georgia – and the colony’s survival. Frederica’s townspeople will be featured. Visitors can meet the citizens on the original lots where they lived and plied their trades. Visitors will glimpse the struggles that the settlers had to overcome.

Entrance for the event is free. Please meet the guide in the breezeway of Fort Frederica’s Visitor Center before 6:00pm when the program starts. For further information, please contact the park visitor center at 912-638-3639 or click here. Fort Frederica National Monument: 6515 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island, GA 31522.

TRIBUTE – A CELEBRATION OF THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND: NOVEMBER 30, 2018

Since its founding in 2013, Atlanta-based TRIBUTE has earned a reputation as the source for the authentic Allman Brothers Band sound around Atlanta and throughout the Southeast. Rigged with vintage equipment, they interpret the Allman catalog in such a way that these songs written in the ’60s and ’70s come alive again. 7:00 PM To 10:00 PM

If the band has learned anything from performing these songs, it is the realization that even though The Allman Brothers Band has shut down, their music maintains the same power over people just as it did 45 years ago. It is a phenomenon TRIBUTE gladly verifies every time they hit the stage.

TRIBUTE recalls that unique period in American rock, when psychedelia ebbed and The Allman Brothers Band informed us what jazz, rock, country and blues could sound like. Comprised of musicians with decades of performance experience, the members of TRIBUTE bring their shared love of The Allman Brothers Band to life when it comes time for hittin’ the note.

crimesBrunswick Actors Theatre Presents “Crimes of the Heart”: Saturday 10th to Sunday 25th, February 2018

The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her. In the end the play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future—but the telling is so true and touching and consistently hilarious that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has descended.

All performances are Saturdays at 8pm / Sundays at 3pm. Doors open 30 minutes prior to curtain – Reserved seating available. $25 PER PERSON (desserts and beverages included). February 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, & 25, 2018. For more info call 912-262-0628 or click here.

lillie_simpsonCultural Expressions: The Gullah Artwork of Lillie Simpson: Monday, February 6th to Monday, March 6th, 2017

Glynn Visual Arts (GVA) is proud to present their latest exhibition in celebration of Black History month and our Coastal Heritage. Opening Reception, Thursday, February 9, 2017, 5:30pm – 7:00pm

Lillie Simpson’s paintings use a vibrant palette and free-flowing sense of composition to create a world that the artist encapsulates in one word: “life.” That liveliness is expressed in the bold colors of the acrylic and oil paints which Simpson uses as well as in the varied textures and scenes she captures. In some of her works, color and form are employed in abstract patterns. Her ability to balance intense and subtle shades gives these paintings a three-dimensional quality and keeps the viewer’s eye in constant motion.

Simpson’s more recent paintings are focused on the life and culture of the Gullah people of South Carolina and Georgia. In these images, she mixes the formal qualities of her abstract works with an expressive depiction of the coastal landscape and its people. The sense of light and air, along with the strong sense of movement, result in engaging images that make the people Simpson depicts come vividly alive. “It’s as though those who had no voice now have one through faint whispers in my creations,” she says.

Memories of living in the coastlands of Georgia, Saint Simons Island and the southeast coastal area, feed and inform Simpson’s artwork. Her first art exhibit was in the Glynn Arts Gallery, Saint Simons Island, GA about 22 years ago where her work was featured alongside world renowned artist Alex Baptiste of Savannah, GA., Ernest Butts of Brunswick, GA, and the late Ana Bel Lee of St. Simons Island, GA. We are pleased to have Simpson now coming full circle back to Glynn Visual Arts for this very special exhibit.

Simpson’s works have been shown most recently at the Agora Gallery in New York, New York – 2014, The Montreal Arts Center, Montreal, Canada – Global Arts League International Exhibit of Professional & Emerging Artists – 2015 and at the Buford Arts Council Gallery, Buford, SC – 2015. Simpson’s work has been featured in many news articles across the southeast including the LowCountry and in the ARTisSpectrum’s 30th Anniversary Issue of Agora Gallery’s (NYC) contemporary fine art magazine.

Glynn Visual Arts Presents “Spatial Concepts”: Tuesday 3rd to Tuesday 31st, January 2017

Three-dimensional (3-D) art is observed in terms of its height, width, and depth. Conceptual art is art in which concepts or ideas are communicated through unique and often metaphorical use of time, space, materials, and imagery, inviting the viewer to do more than just take the casual, off-handed glance. It invites viewers to think and ask questions. What is the artist attempting to communicate? Why this material, why this juxtaposition, why this size, why this image, why this color…? In this new exhibition at Glynn Visual Arts, the 3-D work of Jim Jones will make you think.

Local artist Jim Jones is both a dedicated conservator and a lifelong hunter-gatherer. Jones’ sculptural efforts focus upon the darker side of nature, in which evolutionary fact sometimes becomes mixed with anthropomorphic allusion, in a cornucopia of life forms gone wrong. An uncomfortable relationship between man and beast and suggestions of man’s beastly behavior suffuse these works with an intrinsic strength of expression that is, at times, too close for comfort. Shadows sometimes suggested in Jones’ paintings become real as life in the three dimensions of his sculptural works. http://www.jimjonesart.com/ Phone: 912-638-8770

Cassina’s tenth Annual Garden Walk again celebrates the horticultural beauty of the St. Simons coastal area. It offers an opportunity for visitors to explore and enjoy a seldom seen group of six of the Island’s most inspiring private gardens. The name of the tour was selected to recognize St. Simons Island’s cultural heritage by spotlighting the tabby slave cabins, circa early 1800’s, on historic Gascoigne Bluff and their magnificent setting among the ancient oaks covered with tillandsia, or Spanish moss. The cabins are maintained by Cassina Garden Club, Inc. Proceeds from the Tabby & Tillandsia Garden Walk are used for the preservation and maintenance of our historic tabby cabins and the surrounding grounds.
Our Special Interest Stop will again be ACE Garden Center, which will have plants featured on the Garden Walk and other great gardening ideas.

Advance tickets may be purchased at ACE Garden Center, G.J. Ford Bookshop and St. Simons Drug Store, on St Simons Island, or Cunningham Jewelers and Gentlemen’s Outfitters, in Brunswick.garden_walk_0

Sounds by the Sea Featuring The Phil Morrison-Ken Trimmins Jazz Collective: Sunday, May 22nd, 2016 – 7:00pm – 9:00pm

Golden Isles Arts & Humanities is kicking off its great summertime concert series, Sounds by the Sea, on Sunday, May 22 with The Phil Morrison-Ken Trimmins Jazz Collective. The music starts at 7 p.m. by the sea at Neptune Park, St Simons Island.

“We are thrilled to have The Phil Morrison-Ken Trimmins Jazz Collective as our opening concert headliner,” says Heather Heath, executive director, Golden Isles Arts & Humanities. “They are perennial audience favorites and created the amazing Tribute to Duke Ellington concert that packed the Ritz Theatre in last year. Concert goers are in for a real treat.”

Morrison, who calls the Golden Isles home, is a well-known Boston-born bassist and composer. He has worked with such major artists as Dizzy Gillespie, bluesman T-Bone Walker, vocalist Gloria Lynne and French horn player John Clark. He subsequently joined the trio of pianist/singer Freddy Cole, Nat’s youngest brother, with whom he worked for about five years. During that time, he frequently toured Brazil. That Brazilian influence is reflected in many of Phil’s original compositions.

Trimmins completed a distinguished career with the United States Air Force Band program, which included serving as director of operations for nine touring ensembles and as musical director and bandleader for three Air Force jazz bands. He has a bachelor’s degree in music education from Valdosta State University, a master’s degree in trumpet performance from Mercer University and a doctorate in classical trumpet performance from Florida State University. He is currently the concert band director and an assistant professor at Albany State University.

Sounds by the Sea is presented by Golden Isles Arts and Humanities at Neptune Park on St. Simons Island directly behind the Casino building. The concerts are held on select Sundays and take place from 7-9 p.m. and guests are encouraged to bring a picnic supper and a lawn chair or blanket to relax on.
