The Literary Guild of St. Simons Island presents Nick Doms and From Millionaires to Commoners: The History of Jekyll Island State Park. When Nick Doms first saw Jekyll Island State Park in October 2014, it was love at first sight. He discovered that the history books ended with the demise of the island as a private retreat for wealthy families in the 1940s, as if there was nothing more to tell after Georgia acquired the land for a state park. The author researched the Jekyll’s story to learn about the people who designed, constructed, and managed the enormous transformation and he tells the fascinating story of the island, sharing facts from history books, primary documents, and untold stories from locals who have lived on the land for several decades. Discover how a private, secluded, and exclusive island came to be a state park with open and affordable access to everyone.

St. Simons Casino Building: 550 Beachview Drive, St. Simons Island, GA 31522. Room 108. Free to Literary Guild members and $10 for guests. Reservations recommended here. Event begins at 10:30 AM. PLEASE CANCEL IF UNABLE TO ATTEND.

SAMBASSAMBAS by Raymond Dumas III Exhibit: Monday, July 24th to Monday, August 21st, 2017

Glynn Visual Arts welcomes home a Golden Isles native son, Raymond Dumas III known to local friends and family as “Rusty”. GVA is proud to present “SAMBAS”, a retrospective exhibition with painting works by Raymond Dumas III from 1991 – 2017. Raymond studied Art at Cambridge University in England, the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI, Cooper Union in New York and at the School of Visual Arts, in New York where he earned his Bachelors of Fine Arts in 1995. He later continued his studies to earn a Masters of Fine Arts at Yale University School of Art in 1997. Since then, Raymond has worked extensively in the film, television, print, and advertising industries as a production illustrator and designer. He is a scholar and historian of Nigerian Afrobeat music. He has published articles in Wax Poetics Magazine on Afrobeat music, and Published Photographs in Purple-Fashion Magazine. He has lived in the United States, Mexico and Spain. “My painting impulses come like heat lightning in the St. Simons Island night. They are clouds that burst with incandescent light, revealing a pattern, before closing, only to explode moments later in a new form. The exhibition is called “Sambas” because my art comes as a musical light and rhythm.”, said Dumas. “Some of Dumas’ paintings in this collection range in styles from the quiet and still color fields of Mark Rothko, some include energetic, lines and shapes in an almost grafitti-esque style, others are reminiscent of lines and dots on a map, with repetition suggesting a rhythm of place and convergence.”, said Susan Ryles, Executive Director, Glynn Visual Arts. For more info, call 912-638-8770 or click here.

Opening Reception, Thursday, July 27, 2017, 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Troup and his cousin Chief William McIntosh were involved in the controversial treaty that led to the removal of the Creek tribe from Georgia to Oklahoma. Going west in 1805, Burr explored the possibility of detaching the western territories from the union, along with other roguish pursuits. Charged with treason by President Thomas Jefferson, Burr’s trial before Chief Justice John Marshall challenged the new Constitution. Stewart, a former trial and appellate lawyer, is uniquely equipped to tell the story of one of America’s most famous trials. Author of four books on American history, Stewart has also published three historical mysteries. Lectures will take place at 6:00 p.m. in the A.W. Jones Heritage Center Event Hall. Set in September 1934. The star arrives late and, through a hilarious series of mishaps, is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead. In a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Morelli’s Othello costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably, but Morelli comes to and gets into his other costume ready to perform. Now two Othellos are running around in costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo. This madcap, screwball comedy is guaranteed to leave audiences teary-eyed with laughter. All performances are Saturdays at 8 p.m. / Sundays at 3 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes prior to curtain – Reserved seating available. $25 PER PERSON (desserts and beverages included)

The audience/congregation will be the featured choir, as we enjoy singing many beloved hymns together as a community. The GICC will provide musical leadership along with the Coastal Brass Choir. Along the way, the GICC and brass choir will offer featured compositions, anthems, and hymn settings in addition to the congregational singing. This will be a great opportunity for the GICC members to sing some favorite choral works, such as The Majesty and Glory by Tom Fettke (the top-selling anthem written in the 20th century), My Eternal King by Jane Marshall, and some beautiful settings of hymn tunes. This concert will be more participatory than most, but it’s sure to be a big hit! It’s always a treat for the community to come together, collaborate, and enjoy the musical fruits of our talented friends and neighbors.
All events are free, but we do suggest a $10 minimum donation, which directly supports our programming.
