MOTTE THOMAS EXHIBIT: OCTOBER 1 – OCTOBER 12, 2018

Glynn Visual Arts is proud to present Wax Poetic, an exhibition of encaustic works by Motte Thomas. A culmination of five years of the artist’s work, this will be first time this collection has been shown on the east coast.

The work reveals natural and botanical shapes using colors and forms that are at the same time reminiscent of and incongruent with nature. Thomas uses a pointillist style and layering technique in his work which begs to be viewed both up close and at a distance. Multiple layers of gently woven strokes are built upon each other using properties such as color, texture and material composition to envelope and draw in the viewer. The translucent colors and deep textures construct the familiar organic shapes often observed in nature. The flowing lines, shapes and swirls are built up into three-dimensional forms creating a stunning visual poetry.

Thomas creates a dream-like lyricism and surreal quality which belies the subconscious reflection in these other worldly, yet grounded works. His works have been exhibited in Colorado, Houston, TX, Santé Fe, NM, Atlanta and Brunswick, GA. All works are for sale through Glynn Visual Arts. Opening Reception: Thursday, September 13, 2018.

Glynn Visual Arts: 106 Island Drive, St. Simons Island, GA 31522. For more info, call (912) 638-8770.

DoubleIndemnity

CINEMA GOURMET PRESENTS DOUBLE INDEMNITY: OCTOBER 11, 2018

Cinema Gourmet, Golden Isles Arts and Humanities’ popular series pairing delicious food with classic films, kicks off the 2018-19 season on Thursday, October 11, 2018 with Billy Wilder’s film noir classic, Double Indemnity. The film’s screening and discussion are paired with the culinary delights of Chef Judah Lynch and Indigo Coastal Shanty. The evening’s events begin with delicious food at 6:30 p.m.

A cynical, witty thriller about adultery, corruption and murder, Double Indemnity is considered by many the first true film noir with its Venetian-blind lighting, voice-over narration and blonde femme fatale that creates a mood of danger and attraction. Based on the James M. Cain novel and adapted by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler, the film follows the complex murder scheme of insurance salesman, Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) and the wife of the owner of the double indemnity life insurance policy, Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck.) Lust and greed drive the execution of a “perfect crime” that is in danger of discovery by Walter’s friend and claims manager, Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson.) Though the film didn’t win any of the seven Academy Awards that it was nominated for in 1943, it’s stature has grown through the years ranking high on AFI’s Top 100 Films and selected by the Library of Congress to be placed on the National Film Registry as culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.

Fueled by a love for classic movies and great food, Cinema Gourmet audiences have grown tremendously over the last several years. Because of the limited number of seats available for the food, talk and movie, audience members must purchase their tickets early. The deadline for buying tickets for Double Indemnity is midnight on Monday, October 8th. Tickets are $18 and can be purchased by phone with a credit card or in person at the Ritz Theatre, Tuesdays through Fridays 9 a.m. -5 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased securely online at www.goldenislesarts.org. Tickets for the talk and movie only may be purchased at the door the night of the screening for $7.

The Ritz Theatre is located at 1530 Newcastle St., in downtown Brunswick. For more information, click here or call (912) 262-6934.

SequentialArts

A SEQUENTIAL ARTS EXHIBITION: OCTOBER 16, 2018 – OCTOBER 28, 2018

Glynn Visual Arts (GVA) is proud to present an exhibition curated and featuring art by the founder of the Sequential Arts Program at Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) and Sequential Arts Professor, Bob Pendarvis, along with a diverse selection of his artist friends and former students working in the sequential arts genre.

Comics have been around for about 100 years. The term “sequential art” was coined in 1985 by comics artist Will Eisner in his book Comics and Sequential Art. Eisner analyzed this form and broke it down into four elements: design, drawing, caricature, and writing. Content is presented in a series of artistic items/drawings, positioned in a specific order to convey its message or tell a story. It is essentially visual storytelling through a series of frames or vignettes. A quickly evolving and relatively new genre, sequential arts today includes a variety of mediums such as comics, animation, gaming, picture books, graphic novels, fantasy illustration, amine, cartooning and more. The artists included in this exhibition have successfully harnessed the power of narrative storytelling and are renowned in their respective fields.

The opening reception for the exhibition will be Thursday, October 18th from 5:30 – 7:00pm at Glynn Visual Arts. GVA will also host a free presentation about sequential arts on Thursday, December 6th in which the show’s curator, Professor Bob Pendarvis will discuss this fascinating art genre. Glynn Visual Arts: 106 Island Drive, St. Simons Island, GA 31522.

Artist are often told to stick with one medium, which is something I rebel against. It is the creative process that I am after, and working in both oils and mixed media provides that constant creative challenge.” This exhibition will interest anyone who appreciates the creative process of a fine artist and the beauty of our natural surroundings.

2001_space_oddity_sd1_758_426_81_s_c1A Space Odyssey First Cinema Gourmet of the Season: Thursday, October 12th, 2017 – 6:30pm to 9:00pm

Cinema Gourmet, Golden Isles Arts and Humanities’ popular series pairing delicious food with classic films, kicks off the 2017-18 season on Thursday, October 12, 2017 with Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking science fiction epic, 2001: A Space Odyssey. The film’s screening and discussion are paired with the culinary delights of Indigo Coastal Shanty. The evening’s events begin with delicious food at 6:30 p.m.

Regarded today as one of the most influential films ever made, 2001: A Space Odyssey is less a narrative than a parable about the nature of existence. A large black monolith influences evolution and with stunning visual and often times ambiguous imagery, director Stanley Kubrick creates a mesmerizing journey through time and space. Starring Kier Duella, the 1968 film created stunning and realistic special effects for its time as well as a terrifyingly simple and now iconic phrase spoken by the H.A.L. 9000–“I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.”

Cinema Gourmet continues with Dr. Strangelove on November 9, Mon Oncle on January 11, Much Ado About Nothing on February 8, Chinatown on March 15 and concludes on April 12 with Some Like It Hot.

Tickets are $18 and can be purchased by phone with a credit card or in person at the Ritz Theatre, Tuesdays through Fridays 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased securely online at www.goldenislesarts.org. Tickets for the talk and movie only may be purchased at the door the night of the screening for $7. For more info, call 912-262-6934 or click here.

Now, 32 years later and releasing four full length albums on Island Records and one on Geffen Records founding members Kevin Kinney and Tim Nielsen find themselves enjoying a milestone anniversary for the band, having survived the pressures of fame, a shifting musical landscape, multiple lineup changes, and miles of back roads and highways to arrive here.

With a gold record, 10 full-length albums, and a handful of EPs to their credit, the band still refuses to rest. In 2012, a documentary about the band entitled Scarred but Smarter: Life n Times of Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ was produced. In 2015, a collection of 10 choice cuts from the band’s 4-EP “Songs” series, entitled Best of Songs, was released on Nashville’s Plowboy Records. Additionally, the band was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame the same year. The following year, Drivin N Cryin released a vinyl-only album, entitled Archives Vol One , with a collection of basement recordings from the years 1988 to 1990. Tickets: $25 ADV $30 DOS.
