In celebration of Black History Month, Glynn Visual Arts (GVA) is proud to announce its latest exhibition, a very special private collection of African-American Art. The work will be on loan to Glynn Visual Arts and on exhibit from February 18 – March 29, 2019 at GVA’s 106 Island Drive location on Saint Simons Island. The opening reception will take place on Thursday February 28th from 5:30 – 7:00pm at Glynn Visual Arts. The work has been collected by Sea Island residents, Brenda and Larry Thompson over many years, from an array of notable and highly sought after African-American artists. Brenda and Larry are themselves notable residents of our area and GVA is so grateful for their willingness to share this amazing collection with the public for a short time.

Hofwyl-Broadfield PlantationGHOSTS AND LEGENDS OF HOFWYL-BROADFIELD PLANTATION: DATES VARY BETWEEN MARCH 2, 2019 – APRIL 27, 2019

Take an eerie journey back in time at Coastal Georgia’s most haunted rice plantation. Each Friday night in October, Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site will be offering Ghosts and Legends walking tours of the site. We will walk beneath centuries-old Live Oak trees, explore the plantation out-buildings and finish with a lantern tour of the plantation house.

As we stroll through Hofwyl-Broadfield’s moss laden trees hear the stories of five generations of plantation owners and the African-Americans who worked here, in both slavery and freedom. There will be tales of recent ghostly encounters, plantation folklore and the rich but tragic history of the Lowcountry rice fields.

Marsh Madness CleanupsMARSH MADNESS CLEANUP: DATES VARY BETWEEN MARCH 2, 2019 – MARCH 30, 2019

Twelve March “Marsh Madness” Cleanups Planned, Volunteers Needed

Roll up your sleeves, put on your boots and come get muddy with Keep Golden Isles Beautiful! Help keep the beautiful Marshes of Glynn litter free at one of multiple scheduled March “Marsh Madness” cleanups! Sponsored locally by Georgia-Pacific Brunswick Cellulose Mill and kicking off the national Great America Cleanup effort, TWELVE area salt marsh cleanups have been planned and those dates can be found here.

“Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate in Marsh Madness,” said KGIB executive director Lea King-Badyna. “Cleanups are planned for marsh bordering high ground, ocean bordering parks as well as down in the salt marshes themselves. This is our most expansive Marsh Madness effort to date, and a large volunteer turn out is crucial to making the biggest possible positive impact in removing trash and debris from this valuable natural resource.”

Bags, gloves and volunteer water will be provided; boots, sunscreen, bug spray, clothes/shoes for mud recommended. Golden Isles Chili CookoffRED HOT ROTARY CHILI COOKOFF: MARCH 2, 2019

A day of spicy fun for the entire family, Rotary of the Golden Isles, annual fundraising event with the best of the best competing for the title of Chile Master. Artistry of Strings is the next offering in Sound Bites, a small salon series of special fundraising events sponsored by The Coastal Symphony of Georgia. The music program, presented by Kevin and Laurie Casseday, (cellist and double bass) will include chamber, classical, and contemporary selections.

Jewish Food and Culture FestivalJEWISH FOOD AND CULTURE FESTIVAL: MARCH 24, 2019

Historic Temple Beth Tefilloh, with the help of Tipsy McSway’s Restaurant, will hold its annual Jewish Food and Culture festival Sunday, March 4 noon-3:30 p.m. in the Jekyll Squares off Newcastle Street in downtown Brunswick.

The entire community is invited to learn more about the Jewish culture by experiencing the music, ceremonies, and, in particular, the delicious traditional food. Admission to the festival is free. Temple members will sell varieties of tasty foods and drinks. There will be activities for children, a Jewish Wedding ceremony, Israeli dancing and a raffle.

Proceeds will go to the 125+ year old temple’s restoration and building fund. Klezmer Local 42 band from Athens will be rejoining for this year’s festival. Everyone looks forward to seeing everyone at this fabulous fun event. Tailship Pacemaker ShipTallship Peacemaker Tours: Sunday, March 19th to Sunday, May 28th, 2017
The Class A Tallship “Peacemaker” will be allowing self guided free tours of the decks and main cabins every Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The ship arrived in Brunswick, Sunday, February 28th sailing past the St Simons and Jekyll piers. It will stay docked at Mary Ross Park in downtown Brunswick through the Spring. The Peacemaker is a wooden sailing ship that has sailed as a barkentine and presently as a 3 masted schooner. History and more information about the ship can be seen here.

Although she has continued her studies with other gifted artists, she has purposefully developed her own unique style and has gained widespread recognition for her colorful landscapes. Jo’s main focus is an irresistible subject, water. Her impressionistic paintings of rivers and creeks, beaches and boats are alive with color and feeling. Jo Elliott will be showing as a guest artist at ArtTrends Gallery, 3305 Frederica Road, SSI, Ga. April 4th to May 13th. Hofwyl-Broadfield PlantationGhosts & Legends of Hofwyl Broadfield Plantation: Friday, May 5th and Saturday, May 6th, 2017
Take an eerie journey back in time at Coastal Georgia’s most haunted rice plantation. Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site will be offering Ghosts and Legends walking tours of the site. We will walk beneath centuries old Live Oak trees, explore the plantation out-buildings and finish with a lantern tour of the plantation house.

As we stroll through Hofwyl-Broadfield’s moss laden trees hear the stories of five generations of plantation owners and the African-Americans who worked here, in both slavery and freedom. There will be tales of recent ghostly encounters, plantation folklore and the rich but tragic history of the Lowcountry rice fields.

Ladies Day EpworthLadies Day & Epworth by the Sea: Saturday, May 6th, 2017 – 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Ladies’ Day at Epworth- May 6th in the Nalls Building. Be a vendor or a supporter or come have fun. $3 at the door. A fun day for Ladies to swap clothes, shoes, and accessories and take home other “new to you” things. Visit each vendor in order to qualify for door prizes.

Ladies bring their Gently used, clean clothing, shoes, and accessories to the Nalls Building at Epworth and we sort them according to size on tables. Then, at the appropriate time, we will release the ladies to take as much as they want of someone else’s home with them. That’s the fun part! The clothing swap is optional. The leftover clothes will be donated to Hello Goodbuy on behalf of the Well, a homeless outreach in Downtown Brunswick.

We will be giving door prizes out at 1:30 p.m. You do not have to be present to win, but you do have to visit each booth to qualify. Each vendor will stamp your BINGO card with their stamp or initials. Once you get your card full, bring it back to the front and exchange it for a ticket for the door prizes.

 

Derby DayFrederica Academy Derby Day: Saturday, May 6th, 2017 – 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. for the fun and festive afternoon of spectacular horse race and hat viewing, exciting live and silent auctions, great Southern fare and fellowship. The running of the 2017 Kentucky Derby will be simulcast on large screen televisions inside and outside at 6:15 p.m. so everyone can cheer on their favorite horse and rider in “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.” At 7:15 p.m. Squirt Gun will host a dance party and the raffle will take place. Tickets are $125 and can be purchased here.

Turtle Crawl WeekendTurtle Crawl Weekend: Friday, May 12th to Sunday, May 14th, 2017
Since 2003, Jekyll Island has hosted the Turtle Crawl, a set of races benefiting the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (GSTC). Jekyll Island’s picturesque oceanfront and maritime forest are settings for two triathlons – the International Distance Triathlon and the Sprint Distance Triathlon, both sanctioned by USA Triathlon. Returning for 2017, a 10K race will accompany the 5K run, providing race fun for the whole family. All races are timed, and take place on certified courses.

From elite, world-class athletes to running novices, the Turtle Crawl races offer something for athletes at every skill level. This fun and unique, fair like, tent event is going to directly address those questions and fears that everyone has, specifically focusing on our immediate coastal area putting minds at ease. We believe that after attending this first of its kind outreach, local folks will better understand how to establish an individual and family disaster plan for communication and evacuation of loved ones in an orderly manner. Music is in the air and by the sea as Golden Isles Arts & Humanities gets ready for a great summertime concert series – Sounds by the Sea. A variety of musical offerings will fill Neptune Park from May – September showcasing the best local and regional musicians.

Kicking off the Sounds by the Sea 2017 season on May 28 will be audience favorite and extraordinary jazz ensemble, The Phil Morrison- Ken Trimmins Jazz Collective.

Sounds by the Sea is presented by Golden Isles Arts and Humanities at Neptune Park on St. Simons Island directly behind the Casino building. The concerts are held on select Sundays, for maximum breezes and bug-free comfort by the ocean. The concerts take place from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. and guests are encouraged to bring a picnic supper and a lawn chair or blanket to relax on. Bringing Lincoln to Life: A Lecture by Richard Brookhiser: Wednesday, Nov 4th, 6:00pm at The A.W. Jones Heritage Center, $25 per person. The Society will host journalist, biographer and historian Richard Brookhiser. Mr. Brookhiser, a recipient of the National Humanities Medal, is widely known for a series of biographies of America’s founders, including George Washington and Alexander Hamilton. He has also written and hosted documentary films about Washington and Hamilton for PBS. Mr. Brookhiser will discuss his most recent book, Founders’ Son: A Life of Abraham Lincoln. The Canvas of History: Thursday, Nov 5th, 6:00pm at The A.W. Jones Heritage Center. Famed artist Steve Penley, well-known for his vibrant paintings of our founding fathers, will be putting the finishing touches on an original painting of the Historic Coast Guard Station at East Beach, the Society’s current project. The painting will be raffled to raise funds to purchase an artifact for the future World War II Museum. Raffle tickets are $50 each, and only 300 will be sold. Historic Fun Community Appreciation Day: Saturday, November 7th, 10am-5pm at the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum- The museum doors will open to the community free of charge and they will provide a festival of events during the day, including themed docent-led tours, educational crafts and activities for children and families, performances by local groups celebrating coastal Georgia history and historic lawn games. The Farmer’s Market at Sea Island:  November 14th from 9am-2pm in the parking lot of the Market at Sea Island- This event is now held on the second Saturday of each month, features a variety of fresh produce, artisan products, vendors, live music, and food samples.

Second Sunday: November 8 12pm-5pm- This popular family-friendly music event will take place under the Sidney Lanier Bridge in Brunswick. Each month, the proceeds from Second Sunday benefit a variety of select local charitable organizations. Hundreds of music fans, families, friends – locals and visitors alike – who converge on the park armed with lawn chairs, blankets and coolers, enjoy listening to the live music. The McGladrey (RSM) Classic: Nov 16th-22nd. The McGladrey Classic is a PGA TOUR event played on the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club on St. Simons Island, Georgia. The tournament is hosted by the Davis Love Foundation which was established by PGA TOUR pro golfer Davis Love III for the purpose of contributing to the well-being and progress of society by supporting both national and community-based programs that focus on children and their families. In just its first four years, The McGladrey Classic has raised more than 1.8 million dollars for children and family charities.

The McGladrey Classic is named for title sponsor McGladrey and will be changing to The RSM Classic just in time for the event. The domestic entity, McGladrey, has adopted the name of its international brand, RSM, as of October 2015 thus prompting the renaming of this PGA event.

The Annual Glynn Art in the Park EXTRAvARTganza: April 12th & 13th from 10AM to 5PM- Enjoy a day of art by the ocean! This annual festival presented by The Glynn Art Association, features talented artists from across the country. The event is held in Postell Park by the Pier on St. Simons Island.

The 4th Annual Americana & Blues Festival: April 12th at 7PM- Come out for a night of live music and fun underneath the stars. This annual event is held at Coastal Kitchen and benefits Hospice of The Golden Isles. Tickets are $20.

Second Sunday at Gascoigne Bluff: April 13th from 1-7PM-  Grab your family and friends and head out to the park for an afternoon of live music underneath majestic oak trees. There will be raffles, activities for the kids and of course, lots of fun! Each month, second Sunday benefits a local charity.

Annual Spring Exhibit at The Left Bank Art Gallery: April 17th through May 31st- Celebrate springtime by viewing some wonderful art exhibits.
