CatherineHillis

CATHERINE HILLIS EXHIBIT: MAY 7, 2018 – JUNE 30, 2018

Catherine Hillis has enjoyed the arts all her life. She won awards for her artwork as a child and was a musician in high school and college. As a youngster, she acted and modeled in print and television ads, later majoring in Theatre at the University of Georgia. She knew she would always be involved in the arts in some way.

Her journalist husband’s career took her to different cities, finally settling in the Virginia and Washington D.C. area, where she established her reputation as a fine art water color artist and a popular instructor. In late 2017, she moved to St. Simons Island, on the coast of southern Georgia, to continue her work, inspired by the low country, the beach and the spirit of the area.

Hillis works both in the studio and outdoors. During the past few years, the artist has traveled extensively to plein air competitions, fulfilling her love for painting nature and history. She is drawn to scenes that are often forgotten or neglected and finds the intrinsic beauty in them. Hillis believes that observation is her best teacher and she is known for the effect of light and movement in her work.

Hillis has won hundreds of awards and honors at competitive shows regionally and nationally. She has earned eight Signature Memberships from national watercolor organizations, was one of 40 elected members of the prestigious Washington Society of Landscape Painters and is an elected member of the Georgia Coastal Artists Guild. For more info, call (703) 431-6877.

The concept of self-portraiture is inherently linked to the concept of self-consciousness. The idea of this exhibition is about exploring how we present ourselves to the world. How do we see ourselves as opposed to how others see us? Artistic renderings and representations can be symbolic, realistic or abstract. Work presented will include both two and three dimensional work.

DesignedForMoreLaunch

DESIGNED FOR MORE LAUNCH PARTY: JUNE 12, 2018

Designed For More book is based on a natural phenomenon called a Murmuration. It is a massive gathering of starlings: one of nature’s most incredible phenomena with 100,000 or more birds flocking and flying in beautiful symmetry. With the sky as their canvas, the starlings produce art in motion, consistently avoiding collisions as the waves of their movements caress the clouds. These special formations occur only in a few locations throughout the world, leaving their audiences breathless. So why do these formations occur? And how are they possible? Recent science and video technology have been able to study Murmurations in new ways, revealing the why and the how. The implications are groundbreaking.

5:30pm – Strolling Reception and Book Signing. Open invitation to everyone! The Lodge At Sea Island Golf Club: 100 Retreat Avenue, St. Simons Island, GA 31522.

Taylor

PAUL TAYLOR AMERICAN MODERN DANCE | TAYLOR 2: May 1, 2018

Golden Isles Arts & Humanities is pleased to bring to the Ritz world renowned TAYLOR 2, the touring ensemble of the Paul Taylor Dance Company.  The performance will take place on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 7:30 pm at the Historic Ritz Theatre.

Mr. Taylor established Taylor 2 in 1993 to ensure that audiences all over the world could see his works. He worked with longtime colleague Linda Hodes to create a company that could accommodate performance requests as well as teach and provide community outreach, and he looked back to the 1954 origins of his larger company for the structure of his new company: six professionals with a particular gift for his style who perform his work throughout the world.  “The dances we’re performing at the Ritz Theatre showcase the brilliance of Paul Taylor in a variety of dance styles and themes,” said John Tomlinson, Executive Director of the Paul Taylor Dance Foundation. “These dances – a combination of classics and recent masterworks – are a marriage of some of the world’s greatest choreography – performed by some of the world’s finest dancers.”

Paul Taylor is known as one of the pioneers of modern dance, his choreography noted for its physicality and grace as well as its cultural relevance. In selecting repertoire for Taylor 2, Mr. Taylor chooses dances that span the broad spectrum of his work. IslandPlayers_PlazaSuite

THE ISLAND PLAYERS PRESENT PLAZA SUITE: May 4, 2018 – May 20, 2018

The Island Players Present Plaza Suite by Neil Simon and directed by Bob Boles.

Hilarity abounds in this portrait of three couples successively occupying a suite at the Plaza. A suburban couple takes the suite while their house is being painted and it turns out to be the one in which they honeymooned 23 (or was it 24?) years before and was yesterday the anniversary, or is it today? This wry tale of marriage in tatters is followed by the exploits of a Hollywood producer who, after three marriages, is looking for fresh fields. He calls a childhood sweetheart, now a suburban housewife, for a little sexual diversion. Over the years she has idolized him from afar and is now more than the match he bargained for. The last couple is a mother and father fighting about the best way to get their daughter out of the bathroom and down to the ballroom where guests await her or as Mother yells, “I want you to come out of that bathroom and get married!” For more info, click here or call (912) 638-0330. The Island Players: 530 Beachview Drive, St. Simons Island, GA 31522.

TurtleCrawl

TURTLE CRAWL WEEKEND: May 11, 2018 – May 13, 2018

Since 2003, Jekyll Island has hosted Turtle Crawl, a weekend of races to benefit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Runners from around the world travel to Jekyll for the two USA Triathlon-sanctioned triathlons – the International Distance Triathlon and the Sprint Distance – as well as the 5K and 10K races. The full weekend event will take place Friday, May 11, through Sunday, May 13.

In its 11 years of operation, GSTC has treated and released more than 3,000 animals. The JIA, along with generous supporters through the Jekyll Island Foundation, enable the GSTC to operate its life-saving facility, the only one of its kind in the state of Georgia. Funds raised from athletes participating in Turtle Crawl help cover the rehabilitation costs for the Center’s patients and educational programming. Last year’s race weekend raised more than $26,000 for the Center.

New in 2018, packet pick will be headquartered at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Friday, May 11 from noon to 7 p.m. Athletes are invited to bring their families and friends to enjoy the Center’s programming and see the work their fund-raising supports (admission costs apply). Saturday morning during the triathlons, GSTC staff and volunteers will host field day-style games, sea turtle education, and visits with the Center’s mascot, Scute, at Great Dunes Park.

From elite, world-class athletes to running novices, the Turtle Crawl races offer something for every athlete at every skill level. With four races to choose from combined with a unique island getaway, Turtle Crawl Weekend on Jekyll is a “racecation” for all families. Participants are encouraged to register soon, to receive training tips and updates. Registration fees increase Sunday, April 1. For details, click here.

Starlight and SpartinaSTARLIGHT & SPARTINA: AN EVENING UNDER THE OAKS: MARCH 3, 2018

“Starlight and Spartina — An Evening Under the Oaks” will take place from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, March 3 at the exclusive Musgrove Plantation on St. Simons Island. Money raised from the event will help Coastal WildScapes recruit speakers for its events throughout the year, help fund projects to clean up or protect our environments and keep down the cost of attending its events. Leonard said the organization is fortunate to hold the event in such a breathtaking and historical location. “Musgrove Plantation is one of the few areas left on St. Simons Island that is relatively undisturbed,” he said. “The Brenn Foundation (owners of Musgrove) is an advocate for nonprofits like Coastal WildScapes and works directly with the St. Simons Land Trust and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to conserve most of the Musgrove Plantation. The Brenn Foundation had originally planned to sell 260 acres of the historic property, but coordinated with the St. Simons Land Trust to preserve it instead.” The event will feature both silent and live auctions, and heavy hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served throughout the event. Local band, Tonic Blue will provide the entertainment from the upper balcony in the main lodge. “Our auction items focus on experiences in nature. We have things like canoe and kayaking trips down some of our most pristine rivers, aerial tours of the Georgia barrier islands, fishing and airboat trips, and even boat rentals from one of our local marinas.” There will be other featured auction items such as paintings, artwork and jewelry, to name a few.

And although the event doesn’t begin until 5 p.m., the gardens will open at 4 p.m. for people to tour the grounds before settling in for the evening. The beauty of Musgrove Plantation is reason enough to attend, but the live music, heavy apps and good company make it even better. The live and silent auctions are worth of fighting over and all money raised goes directly towards Coastal WildScapes’ programming throughout the year. Become a member by visiting our website, www.coastalwildscapes.org, and clicking on the ‘Join’ tab on the home page, or by attending one of the many general events throughout the year. Several membership levels are available including benefactor at $500; sustainer, $100; family, $50; individual, $35 and student, $25.

St. Simons Island’s Spring Art CrawlSPRING ART CRAWL: MARCH 15, 2018

Art enthusiasts in the Golden Isles are invited to view the work of guest artist Philip Bates at ArtTrends Gallery, “the gallery with the orange door”, during St. Simons Island’s Spring Art Crawl, an evening of art and refreshments hosted by six St. Simons Island galleries on March 15th from 4-7 p.m.

Philip Bates has been an artist and art teacher for most of his adult life.  He received an MAE degree from the University of Georgia where he studied painting with Lamar Dodd and James Herbert. He has also studied at The Savannah College of Art and Design.  Phil states, “My painting and drawing is in a style that has been described as ‘abstract realism.’ The emphasis is on the natural surroundings, often with architectural images included. My process is to photograph or to sketch in various media followed by studio work on larger pieces.”  He works in acrylics, watercolor, and mixed media.  On his love of painting in acrylics, he comments, “The intensity of the colors reflect the intensity of the Southern coastal light.” Phil’s art has won numerous awards and is displayed in public, private, and business collections throughout Georgia and the U.S.  He resides on Eagle Neck in McIntosh County.  His work will be on display at ArtTrends Gallery from March 13th through April 28th.

During the crawl, ArtTrends Gallery is also proud to showcase new work by its nine artists: Jennifer Miller Broadus, Karen Burnett, Helen Carmichael, Ella Cart, Dottie Clark, Suzy Dmetruk, Ray Garrett, Trish Rugaber, and Syd Summerhill.  For more information about the St. Simons Art Crawl, please contact ArtTrends Gallery at 912-268-4761 or at info@ArtTrendsGallery.biz

Caffeine and OctaneCAFFEINE AND OCTANE AT THE BEACH: MARCH 16, 2018 – MARCH 18, 2018

More than just cars and bikes – for us, it’s a way of life, so we reimagined our favorite car and motorcycle show in totally unexpected ways. The nation’s largest monthly car show drives south east from the bustling city of Atlanta to an idyllic beach atmosphere, right in the heart of the Golden Isles coastline of Georgia.

We too hope to make a place in history by bringing the 2nd annual Caffeine and Octane At The Beach to this one-of-a-kind island. Complete with educational workshops, car displays at every turn, kids custom building activities and a custom motorcycle show, there is no better place in the Southeast to experience the variety and caliber of this meet up.

To date, Caffeine and Octane has been an Atlanta only car show that each month regularly attracts over 500-1000 muscle, classic and exotic cars. We aim for this event to be so much more – a place where auto-enthusiasts of all ages and interests can come together for three days outside the hustle to appreciate and enjoy the speed, style and artistry of the vehicles while soaking in the serenity and beauty of the beach.

Join us March 16-18, 2018, as we take Caffeine and Octane to Jekyll Island Beach, Georgia for a unique three day event chock full of all things mechanized and cool, just as people have come to expect from Caffeine and Octane. Jekyll Island National Historic District- Riverview Drive, Jekyll Island, GA 31527. For more info, call (404) 824-4509 or click here. 2:00 PM.

crimesBrunswick Actors Theatre Presents “Crimes of the Heart”: Saturday 10th to Sunday 25th, February 2018

The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her. In the end the play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future—but the telling is so true and touching and consistently hilarious that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has descended.

All performances are Saturdays at 8pm / Sundays at 3pm. Doors open 30 minutes prior to curtain – Reserved seating available. $25 PER PERSON (desserts and beverages included). February 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, & 25, 2018. For more info call 912-262-0628 or click here.

Ella Cart will be displaying her never-before seen collection inspired by the beauty of wilderness and flowers. “For this show, I wanted to concentrate on something different. When looking throughout my studio, I realized that among my many paintings of landscapes were florals. I realized that these florals truly reflect who I am as an artist, and my creative journey. Artist are often told to stick with one medium, which is something I rebel against. It is the creative process that I am after, and working in both oils and mixed media provides that constant creative challenge.” This exhibition will interest anyone who appreciates the creative process of a fine artist and the beauty of our natural surroundings.

2001_space_oddity_sd1_758_426_81_s_c1A Space Odyssey First Cinema Gourmet of the Season: Thursday, October 12th, 2017 – 6:30pm to 9:00pm

Cinema Gourmet, Golden Isles Arts and Humanities’ popular series pairing delicious food with classic films, kicks off the 2017-18 season on Thursday, October 12, 2017 with Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking science fiction epic, 2001: A Space Odyssey. The film’s screening and discussion are paired with the culinary delights of Indigo Coastal Shanty. The evening’s events begin with delicious food at 6:30 p.m.

Regarded today as one of the most influential films ever made, 2001: A Space Odyssey is less a narrative than a parable about the nature of existence. A large black monolith influences evolution and with stunning visual and often times ambiguous imagery, director Stanley Kubrick creates a mesmerizing journey through time and space. Starring Kier Duella, the 1968 film created stunning and realistic special effects for its time as well as a terrifyingly simple and now iconic phrase spoken by the H.A.L. 9000–“I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.”

Cinema Gourmet continues with Dr. Strangelove on November 9, Mon Oncle on January 11, Much Ado About Nothing on February 8, Chinatown on March 15 and concludes on April 12 with Some Like It Hot.

Tickets are $18 and can be purchased by phone with a credit card or in person at the Ritz Theatre, Tuesdays through Fridays 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased securely online at www.goldenislesarts.org. Tickets for the talk and movie only may be purchased at the door the night of the screening for $7. For more info, call 912-262-6934 or click here.

lillie_simpsonCultural Expressions: The Gullah Artwork of Lillie Simpson: Monday, February 6th to Monday, March 6th, 2017

Glynn Visual Arts (GVA) is proud to present their latest exhibition in celebration of Black History month and our Coastal Heritage. Opening Reception, Thursday, February 9, 2017, 5:30pm – 7:00pm

Lillie Simpson’s paintings use a vibrant palette and free-flowing sense of composition to create a world that the artist encapsulates in one word: “life.” That liveliness is expressed in the bold colors of the acrylic and oil paints which Simpson uses as well as in the varied textures and scenes she captures. In some of her works, color and form are employed in abstract patterns. Her ability to balance intense and subtle shades gives these paintings a three-dimensional quality and keeps the viewer’s eye in constant motion.

Simpson’s more recent paintings are focused on the life and culture of the Gullah people of South Carolina and Georgia. In these images, she mixes the formal qualities of her abstract works with an expressive depiction of the coastal landscape and its people. The sense of light and air, along with the strong sense of movement, result in engaging images that make the people Simpson depicts come vividly alive. “It’s as though those who had no voice now have one through faint whispers in my creations,” she says.

Memories of living in the coastlands of Georgia, Saint Simons Island and the southeast coastal area, feed and inform Simpson’s artwork. Her first art exhibit was in the Glynn Arts Gallery, Saint Simons Island, GA about 22 years ago where her work was featured alongside world renowned artist Alex Baptiste of Savannah, GA., Ernest Butts of Brunswick, GA, and the late Ana Bel Lee of St. Simons Island, GA. We are pleased to have Simpson now coming full circle back to Glynn Visual Arts for this very special exhibit.

Simpson’s works have been shown most recently at the Agora Gallery in New York, New York – 2014, The Montreal Arts Center, Montreal, Canada – Global Arts League International Exhibit of Professional & Emerging Artists – 2015 and at the Buford Arts Council Gallery, Buford, SC – 2015. Simpson’s work has been featured in many news articles across the southeast including the LowCountry and in the ARTisSpectrum’s 30th Anniversary Issue of Agora Gallery’s (NYC) contemporary fine art magazine.
