GHOSTS AND LEGENDS OF HOFWYL-BROADFIELD PLANTATION: DATES VARY THROUGH JULY 14, 2018

Take an eerie journey back in time at Coastal Georgia’s most haunted rice plantation. On select weekend nights this spring, Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site will be offering Ghosts and Legends walking tours of the site. There will be tales of recent ghostly encounters, plantation folklore and the rich but tragic history of the Lowcountry rice fields.

Gene Threats

GENE THREATS ART EXHIBIT: JULY 6, 2018 – JULY 31, 2018

Golden Isles Arts & Humanities will be showcasing the artwork of local artist Gene Threats during the month of July. The exhibit will open on First Friday, July 6th with a reception from 5 pm to 8 pm.

Art has always been a part of Gene’s life; he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Valdosta State University but was unable to fully pursue his career after graduation as he was committed to assisting his mother who was ill. Shortly thereafter, he was diagnosed with total kidney failure and had to undergo rigorous dialysis treatments. It was during this time that he took up color pencils and would draw during his treatments. He has established a unique body of work all done with color pencils.

Gene’s work represents religious and family themes, including community events and locations with an emphasis on people in particular African-American life and culture. “We are delighted to be hosting Gene’s work again,” said Heather Heath, Executive Director. “It is amazing the depth and vibrancy he achieves in what many may consider a very simple medium. I know patrons will be impressed and moved by his work.”

Join us for the opening reception on First Friday, July 6th or stop by The Ritz Theatre Gallery Tuesday – Friday 9 am to 5 pm during the month of July or by appointment. For more information, please call 912.262.6934 or email info@goldenislesarts.org.

CatherineHillis

CATHERINE HILLIS EXHIBIT: MAY 7, 2018 – JUNE 30, 2018

Catherine Hillis has enjoyed the arts all her life. She won awards for her artwork as a child and was a musician in high school and college. As a youngster, she acted and modeled in print and television ads, later majoring in Theatre at the University of Georgia. She knew she would always be involved in the arts in some way.

Her journalist husband’s career took her to different cities, finally settling in the Virginia and Washington D.C. area, where she established her reputation as a fine art water color artist and a popular instructor. In late 2017, she moved to St. Simons Island, on the coast of southern Georgia, to continue her work, inspired by the low country, the beach and the spirit of the area.

Hillis works both in the studio and outdoors. During the past few years, the artist has traveled extensively to plein air competitions, fulfilling her love for painting nature and history. She is drawn to scenes that are often forgotten or neglected and finds the intrinsic beauty in them. Hillis believes that observation is her best teacher and she is known for the effect of light and movement in her work.

Hillis has won hundreds of awards and honors at competitive shows regionally and nationally. She has earned eight Signature Memberships from national watercolor organizations, was one of 40 elected members of the prestigious Washington Society of Landscape Painters and is an elected member of the Georgia Coastal Artists Guild. For more info, call (703) 431-6877.

DesignedForMoreLaunch

DESIGNED FOR MORE LAUNCH PARTY: JUNE 12, 2018

Designed For More book is based on a natural phenomenon called a Murmuration. It is a massive gathering of starlings: one of nature’s most incredible phenomena with 100,000 or more birds flocking and flying in beautiful symmetry. With the sky as their canvas, the starlings produce art in motion, consistently avoiding collisions as the waves of their movements caress the clouds. These special formations occur only in a few locations throughout the world, leaving their audiences breathless. So why do these formations occur? And how are they possible? Recent science and video technology have been able to study Murmurations in new ways, revealing the why and the how. The implications are groundbreaking.

5:30pm – Strolling Reception and Book Signing. Open invitation to everyone! The Lodge At Sea Island Golf Club: 100 Retreat Avenue, St. Simons Island, GA 31522.

Starlight and SpartinaSTARLIGHT & SPARTINA: AN EVENING UNDER THE OAKS: MARCH 3, 2018

“Starlight and Spartina — An Evening Under the Oaks” will take place from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, March 3 at the exclusive Musgrove Plantation on St. Simons Island. Money raised from the event will help Coastal WildScapes recruit speakers for its events throughout the year, help fund projects to clean up or protect our environments and keep down the cost of attending its events. Leonard said the organization is fortunate to hold the event in such a breathtaking and historical location. “Musgrove Plantation is one of the few areas left on St. Simons Island that is relatively undisturbed,” he said. “The Brenn Foundation (owners of Musgrove) is an advocate for nonprofits like Coastal WildScapes and works directly with the St. Simons Land Trust and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to conserve most of the Musgrove Plantation. The Brenn Foundation had originally planned to sell 260 acres of the historic property, but coordinated with the St. Simons Land Trust to preserve it instead.” The event will feature both silent and live auctions, and heavy hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served throughout the event. Local band, Tonic Blue will provide the entertainment from the upper balcony in the main lodge. “Our auction items focus on experiences in nature. We have things like canoe and kayaking trips down some of our most pristine rivers, aerial tours of the Georgia barrier islands, fishing and airboat trips, and even boat rentals from one of our local marinas.” There will be other featured auction items such as paintings, artwork and jewelry, to name a few.

And although the event doesn’t begin until 5 p.m., the gardens will open at 4 p.m. for people to tour the grounds before settling in for the evening. The beauty of Musgrove Plantation is reason enough to attend, but the live music, heavy apps and good company make it even better. The live and silent auctions are worth of fighting over and all money raised goes directly towards Coastal WildScapes’ programming throughout the year. Become a member by visiting our website, www.coastalwildscapes.org, and clicking on the ‘Join’ tab on the home page, or by attending one of the many general events throughout the year. Several membership levels are available including benefactor at $500; sustainer, $100; family, $50; individual, $35 and student, $25.

St. Simons Island’s Spring Art CrawlSPRING ART CRAWL: MARCH 15, 2018

Art enthusiasts in the Golden Isles are invited to view the work of guest artist Philip Bates at ArtTrends Gallery, “the gallery with the orange door”, during St. Simons Island’s Spring Art Crawl, an evening of art and refreshments hosted by six St. Simons Island galleries on March 15th from 4-7 p.m.

Philip Bates has been an artist and art teacher for most of his adult life.  He received an MAE degree from the University of Georgia where he studied painting with Lamar Dodd and James Herbert. He has also studied at The Savannah College of Art and Design.  Phil states, “My painting and drawing is in a style that has been described as ‘abstract realism.’ The emphasis is on the natural surroundings, often with architectural images included. My process is to photograph or to sketch in various media followed by studio work on larger pieces.”  He works in acrylics, watercolor, and mixed media.  On his love of painting in acrylics, he comments, “The intensity of the colors reflect the intensity of the Southern coastal light.” Phil’s art has won numerous awards and is displayed in public, private, and business collections throughout Georgia and the U.S.  He resides on Eagle Neck in McIntosh County.  His work will be on display at ArtTrends Gallery from March 13th through April 28th.

During the crawl, ArtTrends Gallery is also proud to showcase new work by its nine artists: Jennifer Miller Broadus, Karen Burnett, Helen Carmichael, Ella Cart, Dottie Clark, Suzy Dmetruk, Ray Garrett, Trish Rugaber, and Syd Summerhill.  For more information about the St. Simons Art Crawl, please contact ArtTrends Gallery at 912-268-4761 or at info@ArtTrendsGallery.biz

Caffeine and OctaneCAFFEINE AND OCTANE AT THE BEACH: MARCH 16, 2018 – MARCH 18, 2018

More than just cars and bikes – for us, it’s a way of life, so we reimagined our favorite car and motorcycle show in totally unexpected ways. The nation’s largest monthly car show drives south east from the bustling city of Atlanta to an idyllic beach atmosphere, right in the heart of the Golden Isles coastline of Georgia.

We too hope to make a place in history by bringing the 2nd annual Caffeine and Octane At The Beach to this one-of-a-kind island. Complete with educational workshops, car displays at every turn, kids custom building activities and a custom motorcycle show, there is no better place in the Southeast to experience the variety and caliber of this meet up.

To date, Caffeine and Octane has been an Atlanta only car show that each month regularly attracts over 500-1000 muscle, classic and exotic cars. We aim for this event to be so much more – a place where auto-enthusiasts of all ages and interests can come together for three days outside the hustle to appreciate and enjoy the speed, style and artistry of the vehicles while soaking in the serenity and beauty of the beach.

Join us March 16-18, 2018, as we take Caffeine and Octane to Jekyll Island Beach, Georgia for a unique three day event chock full of all things mechanized and cool, just as people have come to expect from Caffeine and Octane. Jekyll Island National Historic District- Riverview Drive, Jekyll Island, GA 31527. When looking throughout my studio, I realized that among my many paintings of landscapes were florals. I realized that these florals truly reflect who I am as an artist, and my creative journey. Artist are often told to stick with one medium, which is something I rebel against. It is the creative process that I am after, and working in both oils and mixed media provides that constant creative challenge.”

This exhibition will interest anyone who appreciates the creative process of a fine artist and the beauty of our natural surroundings. Phone: 912-268-4761.

FDR: Georgia on His MindFall Membership Meeting: FDR: Georgia on His Mind: Thursday, November 16th, 2017 – 6:00pm to 7:00pm

By 1930, when Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell wrote their famous song “Georgia on My Mind,” the state of Georgia was very much on the mind and in the heart of Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1924 the ravages of polio had brought Roosevelt, scion of New York aristocracy, to the rural backwaters of our state for healing of body and spirit. At Warm Springs, he re-discovered his natural exuberance by immersing himself, not only in the healing waters of the therapeutic pools, but also in the lives of ordinary Georgians.

On Thursday, November 16, Jamil Zainaldin will discuss FDR’s love affair with Georgia and describe how his association with Warm Springs shaped his life and presidency. Dr. Zainaldin will also examine FDR’s friendships with prominent philanthropists, such as George Foster Peabody, owner of Warm Springs and native of Georgia, whose success in business funded major contributions to education in the South. The lecture will ask the question: “Could Roosevelt have led America through the Depression and World War II without the restorative refuge he found in Georgia?”

The membership meeting will be held at the A.W. Jones Heritage Center on Thursday, November 16 at 6 p.m. Holiday refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m., so come early and enjoy! Society members attend free of charge and the cost for non-members is $10. Registration is required. 610 Beachview Drive, A.W. Jones Heritage Center,  St. Simons Island, GA 31522

2001_space_oddity_sd1_758_426_81_s_c1A Space Odyssey First Cinema Gourmet of the Season: Thursday, October 12th, 2017 – 6:30pm to 9:00pm

Cinema Gourmet, Golden Isles Arts and Humanities’ popular series pairing delicious food with classic films, kicks off the 2017-18 season on Thursday, October 12, 2017 with Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking science fiction epic, 2001: A Space Odyssey. The film’s screening and discussion are paired with the culinary delights of Indigo Coastal Shanty. The evening’s events begin with delicious food at 6:30 p.m.

Regarded today as one of the most influential films ever made, 2001: A Space Odyssey is less a narrative than a parable about the nature of existence. A large black monolith influences evolution and with stunning visual and often times ambiguous imagery, director Stanley Kubrick creates a mesmerizing journey through time and space. Starring Kier Duella, the 1968 film created stunning and realistic special effects for its time as well as a terrifyingly simple and now iconic phrase spoken by the H.A.L. 9000–“I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.”

Cinema Gourmet continues with Dr. Strangelove on November 9, Mon Oncle on January 11, Much Ado About Nothing on February 8, Chinatown on March 15 and concludes on April 12 with Some Like It Hot.

Tickets are $18 and can be purchased by phone with a credit card or in person at the Ritz Theatre, Tuesdays through Fridays 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased securely online at www.goldenislesarts.org. Tickets for the talk and movie only may be purchased at the door the night of the screening for $7. For more info, call 912-262-6934 or click here.

Art in the ParkArt in the Park: Saturday, April 1st to Sunday, April 2nd, 2017

Spring arrives in style this April as Glynn Visual Arts hosts their 24th annual Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft festival. Over 70 talented artists & skilled crafts people from around the region display an impressive & eclectic collection of handmade artwork. Attendees will enjoy a wide variety of 2 dimensional art, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, photography, textiles, wood, metal & glass. Homegrown beauty products, botanicals & gourmet goodies are also available to delight the senses. A great selection of food vendors serving freshly prepared eats will be available as well. Music, kid’s craft activities & a bicycle treasure hunt, known as “Pedal for Treasure” make this a fun, family friendly event. This festival is held in the beautiful live oak covered Postell Park in the heart of the Pier village, just steps from the ocean on St Simons Island, GA.

Find out how it is made! Throughout the weekend blacksmithing demonstrations will be given on site by a talented family of artists. Attendees will also enjoy the opportunity to meet the artists & connect with them about their artwork. “Shoppers are given the chance to support small businesses, meet the artists & even learn how their new handmade piece of art was made. This makes the ownership or giving of a handcrafted piece truly special”, notes Hannah Roberts, GVA’s Festival Director.

This festival has something for everyone, including the youngest of visitors. The Kid’s “Creation Station” celebrates the smallest artists with free craft activities.

Glynn Visual Arts will again host “Pedal for Treasure” on Sunday afternoon, a bicycle scavenger hunt looking for local visual art. Individuals or groups of two or three are provided clues and a map for a $10 entry fee. The route is an easy loop near the Village area. Last year’s participants were enthusiastic about their adventure – and competitive too! Prizes were awarded for the most correct answers, the best team name, and the best time to finish. All are encouraged to come early for lunch in the park and shop the festival before and after the scavenger hunt.

Jo’s main focus is an irresistible subject, water. Her impressionistic paintings of rivers and creeks, beaches and boats are alive with color and feeling. A five-piece band hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, The Purple Xperience has been touring around the country since its inception in 2011. Hear fan favorites and some surprises. But more than that, The Purple Xperience is a shockingly authentic tribute band that brings the memories of Prince and The Revolution to life to audiences of all ages and all generations. Southern Grown Concert Series: Marshall Tucker Band: December 1st, 2016

The Southern Grown Concert Series presents The Marshall Tucker Band in concert at Rainbow Island Thursday, December 1 at 7 p.m.

In the early fall of 1973 The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage. The band’s recent release of their Live! From Englishtown album is a time capsule from that period. “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray.

Today the band records on its own RAMBLIN’ RECORDS Label (distributed by Sony / RED) and continues to release new and previously unreleased material. For their most recent release, the band dug into the vault and emerged with the original live recordings from its biggest show to date. The new Live! From Englishtown album was originally performed in 1977 and reportedly drew more than 150,000 fans. Still led today by founding member and lead singer Doug Gray, they represent a time and place in music that will never be duplicated.

Golden Isles Arts & Humanities is bringing back the popular Ritz Radio Theatre production of It’s A Wonderful Life for the holiday season. Perfect for all ages, the performance will be presented December 9-18, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 3 pm.

The Ritz Radio Theatre productions are just like they would have been done in the 1940s as live radio broadcasts—in front of a live audience, with period costumes, sound effects and even commercials. “It’s a fun and interactive performance,” says Heather Heath, Executive Director, Golden Isles Arts and Humanities. “The audience is part of the broadcast as their reactions and applause are integral to the show. And getting to see the actors ‘become’ their characters and watch how the sounds are created is very entertaining.”

It’s a Wonderful Life is the beloved tale of a guardian angel named Clarence who helps a despairing businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed. Local radio personality Scott Ryfun takes on the role of George Bailey with some familiar and some new faces joining the cast this year. Scott Akins, Jeff Dempsey, Geoff Matthews, Emmeline Griffith, and Jacqueline Marchbanks join regulars Peggy Shanahan, Kelly Hunter, Lisa Jinkins, Christina Johns, Joan Scheetz, Bryan Thompson, Fred Griffith and Jim Jinkins (as Clarence Oddbody, Angel Second Class) in the lively and fun adaptation of the beloved film.

The Ritz Radio Theatre productions are sponsored in part by Ned Cash Jewelers and local radio station 1440 WGIG and presented by Golden Isles Arts & Humanities. Advance tickets for Golden Isles Arts & Humanities members are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors (age 65 and up). Advance tickets for nonmembers are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors. Day of show tickets for members are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors while the cost for nonmembers is $25 for adults and $20 for seniors. The cost for students (with ID) is always $5 each. To purchase advance tickets, visit www.goldenislesarts.org, or the Ritz Theatre box office, 1530 Newcastle St., Tuesdays-Fridays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. For more information, call (912) 262-6934.

Lend Me a Tenor by Ken Ludwig- October 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30, 2016
Set in September 1934. Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world famous, Tito Morelli, Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as Othello. The star arrives late and, through a hilarious series of mishaps, is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead. In a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Morelli’s Othello costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably, but Morelli comes to and gets into his other costume ready to perform. Now two Othellos are running around in costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo. This madcap, screwball comedy is guaranteed to leave audiences teary-eyed with laughter. All performances are Saturdays at 8 p.m. / Sundays at 3 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes prior to curtain – Reserved seating available. $25 PER PERSON (desserts and beverages included)

As part of the Night Skies Initiative, Fort Frederica National Monument, in conjunction with the University of North Florida, will offer a special astronomy night at 7:00 p.m., on October 8th, 2016. A limited number of telescopes will be made available for public use; we encourage participants to bring their own to reduce viewing times. Have a telescope but don’t know how to use it? Bring it to the event and the staff will provide technical assistance to get you up and running! In the event of inclement weather or cloudy skies, Dr. John Hewitt will give a more in-depth presentation inside the Visitor Center.
And finally, for those amateur photographers out there, if you end up capturing an amazing night sky view from one of these festivals or night sky programs, we encourage you to submit your photo at Share the Experience (sharetheexperience.com), the official federal recreation lands photo contest, now through December 31, 2016. There is even a Night Skies category!
Participation in this contest is a fun way to remember your national park visit, enter for a chance to win more than $25,000 in cash and prizes, and share a glimpse into your experience for those who won’t have the opportunity to visit this year.

Songs of FaithSongs of the Faith: A Festival of Hymns: October 16th, 2016
Join us for A Festival of Hymns – a special concert which will include a wide variety of hymns from across time and tradition. The audience/congregation will be the featured choir, as we enjoy singing many beloved hymns together as a community. The GICC will provide musical leadership along with the Coastal Brass Choir. Along the way, the GICC and brass choir will offer featured compositions, anthems, and hymn settings in addition to the congregational singing. This will be a great opportunity for the GICC members to sing some favorite choral works, such as The Majesty and Glory by Tom Fettke (the top-selling anthem written in the 20th century), My Eternal King by Jane Marshall, and some beautiful settings of hymn tunes. This concert will be more participatory than most, but it’s sure to be a big hit! It’s always a treat for the community to come together, collaborate, and enjoy the musical fruits of our talented friends and neighbors.
All events are free, but we do suggest a $10 minimum donation, which directly supports our programming.
