GHOSTS AND LEGENDS OF HOFWYL-BROADFIELD PLANTATION: DATES VARY THROUGH APRIL 27, 2019

Take an eerie journey back in time at Coastal Georgia’s most haunted rice plantation. Each Friday night in October, Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site will be offering Ghosts and Legends walking tours of the site. We will walk beneath centuries-old Live Oak trees, explore the plantation out-buildings and finish with a lantern tour of the plantation house.

As we stroll through Hofwyl-Broadfield’s moss laden trees hear the stories of five generations of plantation owners and the African-Americans who worked here, in both slavery and freedom. There will be tales of recent ghostly encounters, plantation folklore and the rich but tragic history of the Lowcountry rice fields.

Hofwl-Broadfield Planation

10TH ANNUAL HOFWYL-BROADFIELD EASTER EGG HUNT: APRIL 6, 2019

Join us at Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation on April 6th for our annual Easter Egg Hunt. The event lasts from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. There will be over 3,000 toy filled eggs in three hunt areas for kids aged 1 to 3, 4 to 6 and 7 to 10. Special guest, “The Easter Bunny” will be on-hand throughout.

Other activities include: prizes, refreshments, bubble machine and wands, egg decorating and other arts and crafts. There will also be games like egg toss, 3 legged race, pin the tail on the bunny, face painting and many others. Also on hand will be the Imagination Playground, interactive, transformable giant building blocks that kids can use to create their own play space.

ART IN THE PARK: APRIL 6, 2019 – APRIL 7, 2019

Spring arrives with artistic flair this April as Glynn Visual Arts hosts their 26th annual Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft Festival. Both days are
9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Over 70 talented artists and skilled crafts people from around the region display an impressive and eclectic collection of handmade artwork. Attendees will enjoy a wide variety of two dimensional art, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, photography, textiles, wood, metal and glass. Homegrown beauty products, botanicals and gourmet goodies are also available to delight the senses. Food vendors serving freshly prepared eats will be available as well. Coastal Symphony of Georgia Music

AMERICAN SOUNDS: APRIL 8, 2019

The mission of the Coastal Symphony of Georgia is to engage, enrich, and inspire our community through artistically vibrant musical performances. On April 8, Musical Director and Conductor, Michelle Merrill, will present a program of American Sounds as a resounding affirmation of the various musical delights offered in her inaugural season.

World class violinist, Sarah Crocker Vonsattel, a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, will perform Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto. The program also highlights music of American icons, Copland and Bernstein.

NAO SANTA MARIA: APRIL 9, 2019 – APRIL 15, 2019

The Nao Santa Maria will be sailing into downtown Brunswick, Georgia on April 8th and will be docking until April 15th. The ship and her crew will be open to the public starting April 9th.

The Nao Santa Maria will be offering guided deck tour on the ships five decks. You will find informative information panels and displays that will let you what it was like to sail aboard the Santa Maria over 500 years ago.

Fueled by a love for classic movies and great food, Cinema Gourmet audiences have grown tremendously over the last several years. Because of the limited number of seats available for the food, talk and movie, audience members must purchase their tickets early.

The deadline for buying tickets for The Princess Bride is midnight on Monday, April 8th. Golden Isles Penguin Project - Penguin Bash

PENGUIN BISTRO BASH!: APRIL 14, 2019

Golden Isles Arts & Humanities and The Driftwood Bistro invite you to support The Golden Isles Penguin Project at the upcoming Penguin Bistro Bash! scheduled for Sunday, April 14, 2019 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at The Driftwood Bistro on Jekyll Island.

The Golden Isles Penguin Project is a musical theatre production that casts children and young adults ages 10 -25 with disabilities in all roles. The Penguin Project also utilizes a “peer mentor” system, linking each young artist with an age level peer who does not have a disability. The peer-mentors work side-by-side with their partners, assisting them throughout the entire rehearsal process and on stage. They participate in the group production numbers, but are trained to remain “in the background” and provide direct assistance to their partner only as needed.

Attendees to the Penguin Bistro Bash! will be treated to a delicious Low Country Boil with dessert, a cash bar, and a sneak preview of Shrek, The Musical JR performed by cast members of the Golden Isles Penguin Project. There will also be some great silent auction items to bid on including a one-night stay at the Westin Hotel on Jekyll Island. Tickets are only $50/person and proceeds from the event will support the upcoming production of Shrek, The Musical JR which will take the Ritz Theatre stage June 14- 16, 2019.

Golden Isles Arts & Humanities is the sponsoring organization and launched the program in 2017. The first two productions, Annie, Jr and Disney’s Peter Pan Jr were wonderfully successful playing to sold out audiences. Founded by Dr. Andrew Morgan, a developmental pediatrician in Peoria, Illinois, The Penguin Project strives to demonstrate that individuals with special needs are fully capable of participating in community activities with the same dedication and enthusiasm as others, if given opportunity and support.

Privateer Lynx Tall Ship coming to Brunswick, Georgia

EXPLORE THE TALL SHIP LYNX: APRIL 19, 2019 – APRIL 29, 2019

On April 17th the Privateer Lynx Tall Ship will be sailing into Brunswick, Georgia.

Privateer Lynx is a replica of an 1812 privateer with the same name. The ship is out of Nantucket Mass. that is owned and operated by the Lynx Educational Foundation. Tall Ship Lynx is a well respected and famous Top Sail Schooner Tall Ship. The Lynx mission is to teach the youth about maritime history during the 1812 war when was fighting for our independence and for fair trade. The Lynx will be docked at the Brunswick Landing Marina April 17th until April 24th and will move to the St. Simons Island Fishing Pier until April 29th.

The ship will be open to the public offering Free dockside Deck Tours, along with offering their award-winning educational programs to schools and youth groups. The lynx and crew is also offering daily public sailing which is a public 2 1/2 interactive sailin aboard the historical Privateer Lynx, Tickets for the public sailing are now available at the link below.

St Marys Tall Ship Alliance is a Georgia Nonprofit organization that promotes and preserves the history of Tall Ship and the Maritime history of Georgia along with recruiting them to visit the Coast of Georgia.

Shell-E-Brate Spring Festival

SHELL-E-BRATE SPRING FESTIVAL: APRIL 5, 2018 – APRIL 6, 2018

Two day festival of local and regional organizations, collaborative projects & activities to highlight the influence and relationship of tidal changes along Georgia’s coastal habitats and how community members can make environmentally friendly decisions that aid in protecting our natural resources, both inland and near the coast.

COFFEE WITH THE AUTHOR JULIE BRAGG: APRIL 6, 2018

Julie is legendary in Macon for her home-based swim school. Her life-affirming memoir details the tragedy that struck when her two sons were killed in a car accident in Texas. However, the family managed to get on with their lives and, eventually Bragg Jam, a huge regional music festival, was started in memory of the brothers.

J. Ford Bookshop will be selling copies of Ms. Bragg’s book at the event, and we encourage you to purchase your books at the coffee so you can have them signed by the author. Our local independent bookstore makes many of our author appearances possible. Too many books? Why not purchase one, read it, then donate it to our book sale or the library?

Coastal Photography Exhibit - Earth Day

COASTAL PHOTOGRAPHERS GUILD EXHIBIT: APRIL 8, 2018 – APRIL 30, 2018

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Coastal Resources Division (CRD) will open a unique exhibition featuring photography from members of the Coastal Photographers Guild on April 8, on view until April 30. The Beaches to Barrier Islands exhibit will feature over 40 works by guild members, in an outdoor setting along the Earth Day Nature Trail on the campus of the GA DNR’s Coastal Regional Headquarters Campus in Brunswick.

An opening reception will be held on Sunday, April 8th from 3:00 – 4:30pm at the Susan Shipman Environmental Learning Center adjacent to the Nature Trail entrance. The self-guided free exhibit will be on display throughout the four-acre site and is open to the public during daylight hours thru April 30th.

Young Eagles Flight

YOUNG EAGLES FLIGHT: APRIL 21, 2018

Children ages 8-17 can experience the thrill of aviation and enjoy an airplane ride over the beautiful beaches, rivers and Marshes of Glynn at no charge on Saturday, April 21. The first 100 young people to sign up will take to the skies, courtesy of Chapter 905 of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), based at McKinnon St Simons Island Airport.

Through their Young Eagles program, EAA pilots take their young passengers on 15-20 minute flights that demonstrate the freedom and excitement of aviation firsthand. A parent or legal guardian must be present to give permission to fly for each child. To fly with the Young Eagles, please click here and select a flight time. Green is the name of the game at the 10th annual Keep Golden Isles Beautiful “Clean and Green” golf tournament, where participants have fun on the greens and help keep the Golden Isles clean and green at the same time.

The excitement takes place on Monday, April 23 at the Brunswick Country Club with an 11:30 AM tournament lunch and a 1:00 PM shotgun start. Limited to the first twenty teams to register, entry fees for this 4-player scramble are $100/player and $400/team.

Cassina's Garden Walk

CASSINA’S ANNUAL GARDEN WALK WEEK: APRIL 28, 2018

Since 2006, Cassina Garden Club has hosted a tour of usually 7 private gardens in St. Simons and some years, Sea Island, for the public viewing. This event has evolved into a much loved annual event for visitors and residents alike. The public, for a small fee, views a variety of gardens some planted and tended by the owners and others initiated by professional designers.

The ticket covers the tours of gardens, a marketplace with local vendors, a garden party and entertainment at the cabins during the garden walk. The cabins are also open for tours during Garden Walk. This is the main fundraiser for Cassina to secure funds to cover the cost of maintenance and upkeep of the cabins and gardens.

As you walk beneath centuries old Live Oaks, explore the out-buildings on the plantation and a lantern tour of the main house you will hear tales of recent ghostly encounters, plantation folklore and the rich but tragic history of the Low County rice fields.

The tour will be approximately one mile in length and last for one and a half hours. It is suggested that visitors wear shoes comfortable for walking. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to make sure you have time to get to the tour. Don’t forget your bug-spray. Reservations Requested.

The Annual St. Simons Island Sunshine Festival held in the Pier Village on St. Simons has been an island tradition for over 60 years. The family fun starts this year on Saturday, July 2nd and runs through Monday, July 4th.

Fireworks: The fireworks display begins at 9:00pm. on the evening of the July 4th. So bring your chair and meet your friends in oceanfront Neptune Park and sit back and watch the show.

Sunshine Arts & Crafts Show: This Sunshine Festival features an Arts & Crafts Show that highlights some of the region’s best artists and crafters whose wares include painting, pottery, jewelry, woodcraft, photography, garden art and more! The show starts Friday, July 1st and runs through Tuesday, July 4th at Postell Park.

Sunshine Festival 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run: Bring the family and participate together in a 1 mile fun run and 5K race on July 4th. The 5k race starts at 7:00am  and the 1 mile fun run begins at 8:00am. Start/Finish/Ceremony for both races will be at Mallery Park on St. Simons Island. (Mallery Park is just north of Kings Way on Mallery Street). Brunswick’s Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration takes place in Mary Ross Waterfront Park in Downtown Brunswick starting at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4th. Summer Classic Film Festival: Friday 14th to Sunday 16th, July 2017

Summer Classic Movies at the Ritz is transforming into the Summer Classic Film Festival, a full weekend of classic films that will feature the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock and his favorite leading lady, Grace Kelly. The festival will take place July 14-16, 2017 with all three of the Hitchcock-Kelly films and other special events.

  • On Friday, July 14, the Summer Classic Film Festival will kick off with Dial M for Murder, the first of the Hitchcock-Kelly collaboration. Preceding the screening will be a talk about the director and a delicious meal prepared by Indigo Coastal Shanty.
  • On Saturday, July 15 at 4 pm, Mel Brooks’ delightfully silly parody, High Anxiety will be screened. Filmgoers can then take a break in one of downtown Brunswick’s participating restaurants for a special film meal and return to the Ritz by 7 pm to catch the highly suspenseful Rear Window.

Go behind the scenes during Georgia coast’s sea turtle nesting season with Catherine Ridley of the SSI Sea Turtle Project! We’ll meet at the Coast Guard Beach beach access boardwalk for an interactive beach night hike, where we’ll discuss loggerhead natural history, explore the beach at night in search of hatching turtles, and see how turtles nests are protected on Georgia’s beaches. You’ll learn the many ways you can help protect these amazing animals, explore bioluminescence and nocturnal science, and discover your own natural night vision. $10 members and $15 non-members.
