Take Out for a Cause: How to Help in the Golden Isles

Tuesday, April 14th, 2020

During this confusing and uncertain time, there are still ways that you can safely contribute to our local community. Have you heard of the Firebox Initiative?

The following is an excerpt from their Facebook page:

The Firebox Initiative Inc. was founded by restaurant people for restaurant people. Griffin Bufkin and Harrison Sapp know what it means to suffer through tough times. When their restaurant, Southern Soul Barbeque, burned down on March 27, 2010 they did not know how they would get through. They quickly found out that their friends in the community and in the restaurant business would lift them up in their time of need. They have never forgotten that feeling and it is what drives their desire to help others with the Firebox Initiative.
The Firebox Initiative provides grants to employees of our restaurant community in Coastal Georgia. We help service industry employees who are in financial need because of an illness, accident or natural disaster. We will also help provide direct grants to restaurant employees who need help paying for funeral arrangements for immediate family members.

How can you help? It’s easy! All you have to do is order the following menu* items from local restaurants on the following days or simply go here to donate.

**Be sure to find the current menu on Firebox’s Facebook or Instagram pages as it rotates weekly.**

SANKOFA: IF STITCHES COULD TALK: FEBRUARY 4, 2020 – MARCH 6, 2020

Glynn Visual Arts celebrates Black History Month with, Sankofa: If Stitches Could Talk, a new exhibition featuring works by Atlanta artist, Tracie Lee Hawkins. The word “Sankofa” is a word in the Twi language of Ghana that translates to “go back and get it”, representing the need to reflect on the past to build a successful future. This concept is evident in Hawkins’ work.

Through a series of quilts designed and created each year of the Obama Presidency as well as other historic Civil Rights themes, Hawkins documents and makes commentary on our recent history through her stitches.

Hawkins has been published in the International Review of African American Art, Hampton Virginia in 2010, and exhibited her historic Obama collection at the National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African American Culture at Alabama State University in 2012. Her completed collection of Obama quilts was exhibited at Alabama State University Warren/Britt Gallery in 2013.

TWO ON THE AISLE, THREE IN A VAN: DATES VARY BETWEEN MARCH 7, 2020 – MARCH 22, 2020

“Two On The Aisle, Three In A Van” is a comedy where the point of view comes from the unsung heroes who call the shows, man the spotlights, sew the costumes, count the tickets and suffer through every flubbed line, forgotten prop and missed cue.

Due to the lack of wing space, the company spends their downtime in the parking lot around an aging hippie/now turned techie’s van. Egos and obstacles fall into the lap of Mike, the nice guy director, who ends up with more than he bargained for.

Anyone who has ever seen a show or has done a show may know these people. In the end, “Two On The Aisle, Three In a Van” continues to prove the old adage that some way, somehow, the show must go on. And it does…just not always as planned.

AN EVENING WITH GEORGE WINSTON: MARCH 9, 2020

George Winston is undeniably a household name. He’s inspired fans and musicians alike with his singular solo acoustic piano songs for more than 40 years while selling 15 million albums. A tireless road warrior playing nearly 100 concerts annually, live performance for Winston is akin to breathing. Winston’s music is evocative, offering us all a chance to take a step back from our perpetually busy lives and let our minds adventurously wander.

George Winston’s classic albums, Autumn and December, are perennial favorites, along with Winter into Spring, Summer, 2017’s Spring Carousel – A Cancer Research Benefit, as well as two volumes of the compositions of Vince Guaraldi, two volumes of benefit albums for the Gulf Coast disasters, and six other solo piano albums. He just released his 15th solo piano album, Restless Wind, via Dancing Cat Records/RCA Record. Restless Wind is a portrayal of Winston’s place in a chaotic world – his compositions extend solace with an idiosyncratic grace. The album is available now at GeorgeWinston.com

WARRIOR WOMEN EVOLVING: MARCH 10, 2020 – APRIL 11, 2020

Alice Woodruff’s exhibition of ceramic figurative sculpture opens at Glynn Visual Arts on Tuesday, March 10th with a special preview opening for women only. Men will get their chance at the GVA’s regular opening reception for the show on Thursday March 12th.   “Warrior Women Evolving” features female vessels that represent famous and unknown women. All are portraits of extraordinary strength and wisdom.  Some of the nude figures are draped, others have an “open belly” in which a tableau from their life is displayed. Each figure has written history and story that accompanies the art. Much of the work is highly politicized and emotion-driven, in many cases created in response to conditions in the larger world such as the #METOO movement and the threat to women’s lives, safety and happiness. The body of work, as a whole, explores the evolution of female empowerment from helpless victim to weaponized champion, the value of “women’s work” as well as more personal stories of cancer and motherhood. This exhibit is particularly important in view of the fact that 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote.

NICK DIPAOLO AT THE RITZ THEATRE: FEBRUARY 1, 2020

In this day of watered down comedy Nick Di Paolo’s brutally honest performances remind us of what great stand up should be – funny, socially relevant and a little bit reckless. He currently hosts “The Nick Di Paolo Show” Mondays through Thursdays and has been featured on “The Nick Di Paolo Show” on SiriusXM, and “The Nick & Artie Show” on DirectTV. He has performed on The Tonight Show, Late Night with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Conan O’ Brien. He was twice nominated for an Emmy for his writing on HBO’s The Chris Rock Show. He was one of the stars on Tough Crowd with Colin
Quinn and a stand out on many Comedy Central Roasts. Not limited to stand-up, radio and writing, he has had acting roles on FX’s Louie, Inside Amy Schumer, The Sopranos, Cop Show and CK’s critically acclaimed Horace and Pete as well as many other sitcoms.

Glynn Visual Arts celebrates Black History Month with, Sankofa: If Stitches Could Talk, a new exhibition featuring works by Atlanta artist, Tracie Lee Hawkins.

ABBAMANIA

ABBAMANIA IN CONCERT: OCTOBER 10, 2019

In the beginning, “ABBAMANIA” was six months in rehearsals just for vocal arrangements.  Abba’s harmonies are very difficult to reproduce as ABBA recorded their vocals many times on each record to make them sound so big and full. Not only did the cast have to look like Anni-Frid, Bjorn, Benny and Agnetha, they had to sound like them. ABBAMANIA was a huge venture. They are backed by a live band and carry charts for a full symphony show.  They sold out two shows, 6000 tickets, with the San Diego Symphony.

With authentic costumes, made by the seamstress from MAMMA MIA, and incredible vocals, ABBAMANIA will take you back in time to when ABBA was on stage, live in concert.

Food vendor to be announced soon! Rainbow Island/Sea Island. 8 p.m., doors open at 7 p.m. $45/person. For more info, click here.

The St. Simons Art Crawl is always an enjoyable evening for the public to come out and view new works of art while enjoying light refreshments. For this fall’s art crawl, on Thursday, October 17, from 4-7 pm, four local galleries wanted to expand the celebration of the arts. What better way than join with the immensely talented Golden Isles Youth Orchestra?  The GIYO was formed in 2005 to introduce classical music to the children of Glynn County and surrounding areas. Its goal is to offer a positive learning environment where teamwork prevails and where friendships that are rooted in a shared passion for music flourish, crossing the boundaries of geography, income, race and gender. Today, over 700 young students participate in the GIYO. During the crawl, young musicians will be playing at each of the galleries.  In appreciation, ArtTrends Gallery, Anderson Gallery, Wallin Gallery and Glynn Visual Arts will donate 10% of sales to the GIYO, and donations will gladly be accepted.  All are invited to join us on October 17th for this special celebration of the arts.

Coastal Symphony of GeorgiaCOASTAL SYMPHONY OF GEORGIA OPENING NIGHT: SEPTEMBER 23, 2019

On Opening Night of the 2019-2020 Season, the musicians invite the audience to visualize the music as we listen. In Luster, rising star Jared Miller gives what he calls the “shiny, bejeweled colors and timbres” of 90s disco music for an orchestra rather than a nightclub. Some may think of birds in flight listening to the repeating, soaring sounds, especially in the strings. Others may feel they could pluck the shimmering notes from the air.

The strings then take you into the nursery with the softer, sweeter sounds of George Gershwin’s Lullaby. Here, they give a quietly repeating theme, and as you listen, it is easy to see a mother rocking her baby’s cradle. But don’t nod off! We are about to be treated to Gershwin’s iconic An American in Paris, a jazz influenced symphonic tone poem written in 1928 and later adopted for a very popular film in 1951. One can easily see Gene Kelly dancing his way through Paris as the music reflects the impressions of an American as he strolls the streets and absorbs the atmosphere. Gershwin called it a “rhapsodic ballet.”

Following intermission, there will be two lovely and charming pieces by Maurice Ravel. La Valse, a choreographic poem for orchestra, takes you into the castle ballroom where dancers waltz and whirl, shutting the doors on the outside world. Ravel’s whimsical Mother Goose Suite is an orchestral ballet that opens with a slow, precise dance evocative of a princess sleeping in a wood, before moving on to the adventures of Little Tom Thumb, and the Little Ugly Girl, and the charming waltz of Beauty and the Beast. The Suite closes with a sweeping, powerful melody in the strings giving the magical happy ending of The Fairy Garden.

Opening Night of the 2019-2020 Season will fully engage the audience!

Syd Summerhill SculptureGLYNN VISUAL ARTS EXHIBIT: JANUARY 2, 2019 – FEBRUARY 16, 2019

R : I : S : E
Glynn Visual Arts is proud to present our first exhibition of 2019, RISE. This exhibition features the work of photographer, Paula Eubanks and sculptor, Syd Summerhill.

The surrealistic photography of Paula Eubanks makes a statement about sea level rise in a unique and provocative way. A native of the Georgia coastal area and a scholar of the historic architectural sites along with the ecology of Georgia’s barrier islands, Paula addresses the issue of sea level rise through juxtaposing images of the historic coastal buildings with imagery of water within those architectural boundaries creating beautiful and thought-provoking imaginings and compositions. The Sea Level Series is crafted using images made in historic coastal buildings, like Fort Clinch and Fort Pulaski where sea level is measured, and structures on Ossabaw, Saint Simons and Cumberland Islands, combined with images of water. Usually the beach is a place for play and appreciation of great beauty where a view of the water is highly valued. As sea level rises, that same charismatic water could become a threat.

Syd Summerhill’s elegant marble and bronze sculptures are exhibited coast to coast and are held in significant collections throughout the country. His range and intimate knowledge of the materials with which he works have led to a prolific body of work from maquettes to monumental pieces. His figurative work, whether in marble, stone, wood or bronze, are light, warm and graceful. Syd is a member of The National Sculpture Society and co-founder of the Art City School of Sculpture in Southern California. He is largely self-taught and his work has won awards across the country. He now lives and works on Saint Simons Island.

Glynn Visual Arts: 106 Island Drive, St. Simons Island, GA 31522. Fore more info, call (912) 638-8770, email susan@glynnvisualarts.org, or click here.

The Big ReadTHE BIG READ: FEBRUARY 21, 2019 – FEBRUARY 23, 2019

NEA Big Read, the community-wide reading initiative returns to Coastal Georgia in 2019 with Celeste Ng’s award winning novel, Everything I Never Told You.

In a small town in Ohio in 1977, the oldest daughter and favorite child of a biracial couple — her mother is white, her father is Chinese-American — is found drowned in a lake. As her parents and siblings struggle to solve the mystery of her death, a web of family secrets emerge to reveal how fragile the relationships between husband and wife, parent and child, and brother and sister can be when ambitions are thwarted, societal pressures mount, and fears and desires are kept buried. Celeste Ng’s debut novel Everything I Never Told You (Penguin Press, 2014) alternates between past and present and is told from the various perspectives of each grieving member of the family, all of whom come to realize in their own way how little they knew about the people they thought they knew best.

In conjunction with this year’s Big Read selection, the Middle and Little Big Reads return with companion books for young and middle grade readers. The Middle Big Read selection is Wonder by R.J. Palacio and for The Little Big Read selection is Zen Shorts by Jon J Muth. Free copies of all three selected books will be distributed to schools in Glynn, Camden and McIntosh counties and to the public while supplies last.

The NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. Locally the program is coordinated by Golden isles Arts & Humanities and its partners, The College of Coastal Georgia, Marshes of Glynn Library System, Three Rivers Regional Library System with additional support is provided by The Literary Guild of St Simons Island, Brunswick News Publishing, iHeartRadio, and hello/Goodbuy.

The NEA Big Read will officially kick off on February 1st during the First Friday festivities in downtown Brunswick. A Cultural Tasting will be the theme of the evening and patrons can visit a variety of locations to find out about many of the different cultures that make up our community. The Art of the World/Art of My World and Inspired by Zen Shorts exhibits will open at the Ritz Theatre featuring work by elementary, middle and high school students.

The weeks that follow will include discussions, performances, films, art exhibits and school programs that are designed to get everyone in the community reading, discussing and thinking about Everything I Never Told You and to celebrate and showcase our differences and hopefully allow those things not said, to be said.
