NICK DIPAOLO AT THE RITZ THEATRE: FEBRUARY 1, 2020

In this day of watered down comedy Nick Di Paolo’s brutally honest performances remind us of what great stand up should be – funny, socially relevant and a little bit reckless. His strong political opinions and razor wit make him a perfect fit for talk radio. He currently hosts “The Nick Di Paolo Show” Mondays through Thursdays and has been featured on “The Nick Di Paolo Show” on SiriusXM, and “The Nick & Artie Show” on DirectTV. He has performed on The Tonight Show, Late Night with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Conan O’ Brien. He was twice nominated for an Emmy for his writing on HBO’s The Chris Rock Show. He has also had three half hour standup specials on Comedy Central, and four one-hour specials: “A Breath of Fresh Air” (2019) and the wildly popular “Raw Nerve”, “Another Senseless Killing” and “Inflammatory”. He was one of the stars on Tough Crowd with Colin
Quinn and a stand out on many Comedy Central Roasts. Not limited to stand-up, radio and writing, he has had acting roles on FX’s Louie, Inside Amy Schumer, The Sopranos, Cop Show and CK’s critically acclaimed Horace and Pete as well as many other sitcoms.

This concept is evident in Hawkins’ work.

Through a series of quilts designed and created each year of the Obama Presidency as well as other historic Civil Rights themes, Hawkins documents and makes commentary on our recent history through her stitches.

Hawkins has been published in the International Review of African American Art, Hampton Virginia in 2010, and exhibited her historic Obama collection at the National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African American Culture at Alabama State University in 2012. MEET THE AUTHOR SERIES PRESENTS CLARA SILVERSTEIN: SEPTEMBER 4, 2018

The author of four books including A White House Garden Cookbook and White Girl: A Story of School Desegregation. A long-time writer in the Boston area, she directed the well-known Chautauqua Writers’ Center from 2008 to 2017. Her first novel, Secrets in a House Divided, is forthcoming from Mercer University Press in the fall of 2018. Set in Richmond, Virginia in 1864-65, it explores the relationships between masters and slaves, husbands and wives, parents and children, as the Civil War drives them to a flashpoint. Though the story is set in the past, its focus on the roots of racism resonates today.

J. Ford Bookshop will be selling copies of Ms. Silverstein’s book at the event, and we encourage you to purchase your book at the coffee so you can have it signed by the author. Our local independent bookstore makes many of our author appearances possible. Too many books? Why not purchase one, read it, then donate it to our book sale or the library?

St. Simons Casino Building: 550 Beachview Drive, St. Simons Island, GA 31522. Room 108. Free to Literary Guild members and $10 for guests. Reservations recommended here. 10:30 a.m.

MotteThomas_GlynnVisualArts

MOTTE THOMAS EXHIBIT: SEPTEMBER 11, 2018 – OCTOBER 12, 2018

Glynn Visual Arts is proud to present Wax Poetic, an exhibition of encaustic works by Motte Thomas. A culmination of five years of the artist’s work, this will be first time this collection has been shown on the east coast.

The work reveals natural and botanical shapes using colors and forms that are at the same time reminiscent of and incongruent with nature. Thomas uses a pointillist style and layering technique in his work which begs to be viewed both up close and at a distance. Multiple layers of gently woven strokes are built upon each other using properties such as color, texture and material composition to envelope and draw in the viewer. The translucent colors and deep textures construct the familiar organic shapes often observed in nature. The flowing lines, shapes and swirls are built up into three-dimensional forms creating a stunning visual poetry.

Thomas creates a dream-like lyricism and surreal quality which belies the subconscious reflection in these other worldly, yet grounded works. His works have been exhibited in Colorado, Houston, TX, Santé Fe, NM, Atlanta and Brunswick, GA. All works are for sale through Glynn Visual Arts. Opening Reception: Thursday, September 13, 2018.

Glynn Visual Arts: 106 Island Drive, St. Simons Island, GA 31522. For more info, call (912) 638-8770.

Spring arrives in style this April as Glynn Visual Arts hosts their 24th annual Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft festival. Over 70 talented artists & skilled crafts people from around the region display an impressive & eclectic collection of handmade artwork. Homegrown beauty products, botanicals & gourmet goodies are also available to delight the senses. A great selection of food vendors serving freshly prepared eats will be available as well. Music, kid’s craft activities & a bicycle treasure hunt, known as “Pedal for Treasure” make this a fun, family friendly event. This festival is held in the beautiful live oak covered Postell Park in the heart of the Pier village, just steps from the ocean on St Simons Island, GA.

Find out how it is made! Throughout the weekend blacksmithing demonstrations will be given on site by a talented family of artists. Attendees will also enjoy the opportunity to meet the artists & connect with them about their artwork. “Shoppers are given the chance to support small businesses, meet the artists & even learn how their new handmade piece of art was made. This festival has something for everyone, including the youngest of visitors. The Kid’s “Creation Station” celebrates the smallest artists with free craft activities.

Glynn Visual Arts will again host “Pedal for Treasure” on Sunday afternoon, a bicycle scavenger hunt looking for local visual art. Individuals or groups of two or three are provided clues and a map for a $10 entry fee. The route is an easy loop near the Village area. Jo’s main focus is an irresistible subject, water. Her impressionistic paintings of rivers and creeks, beaches and boats are alive with color and feeling. Jo Elliott will be showing as a guest artist at ArtTrends Gallery, 3305 Frederica Road, SSI, Ga. April 4 to May 13. The Purple Xperience is just that—an experience. A dazzling purple-tinged performance that embodies the spirit and sounds of the legendary and iconic Prince. A five-piece band hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, The Purple Xperience has been touring around the country since its inception in 2011. Hear fan favorites and some surprises. But more than that, The Purple Xperience is a shockingly authentic tribute band that brings the memories of Prince and The Revolution to life to audiences of all ages and all generations.
