Sea Island commemorates the distinctive culture of all things Southern with the third annual Southern Grown, giving guests a chance to taste, sip, learn about, and experience the unique cuisine and traditions of the most special region of America. The weekend overflows with opportunities, opening with Friday night’s Garden & Gun Kick-Off Dinner and a Show. Saturday’s daytime Southern Grown Marketplace and Southeastern Wildlife Exposition precedes an oceanside dinner and a concert with Drive-By Truckers followed by a late night After Glow Event. Southern Grown Concert Series: Drive By Truckers: Saturday, September 2nd, 2017 – 6:30pm to 9:00pm
The music of the American South in a two-act forum culminates with the arrival of Drive by Truckers, from Athens, Georgia. The VIP section is catered by Chef Chris Dickerson of Corner Taco from Jacksonville, Florida. While the local favorite, Southern Soul, takes over the Cook House. Drive-By Truckers have always been outspoken, telling a distinctly American story via craft, character, and concept, all backed by sonic ambition and social conscience. Founded in 1996 by singer/songwriter/guitarists Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood, the band have long held a progressive fire in their belly. AMERICAN BAND’s considerable force can in part be credited to the sheer musical strength of the current Drive-By Truckers line-up, with Hood and Cooley joined by bassist Matt Patton, keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Jay Gonzalez, and drummer Brad Morgan – together, the longest-lasting iteration in the band’s two-decade history. Shaken or Stirred? Come learn a few new tricks and mixes at the bar with John Sabbe! John Sabbe is currently a bartender at Tipsy McSway’s located in Brunswick, Ga. John has a diverse background ranging from a certified coffee master, bartender, brewer, and cook.
John is a dedicated member of the United States Bartenders Guild and is currently working on achieving his second level Cicerone certification. He is passionate about the ingredients he uses to craft his cocktails; a passion that guides him to create many of his own bitters, shrubs, and infusions. The Literary Guild of St. Simons Island Film Series presents Our Little Sister, Japan, 2015, directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Sachi Koda was left to care for her sisters, Yoshino and Chika, when their mother left their old, sprawling home in the seaside town of Kamakura a year after their father left her for another woman. News of the father’s death 14 years later brings the three twenty-somethings north where they meet their sibling from his second marriage, Suzu, and invite her to come live with them. Tipsy’s is hosting a Bartender Showdown, and yep, it’s our first rodeo. Come and see what the Sam Hill is going on as 8 local bartenders rope some spirits in a bracket style competition with mystery ingredients to create the winning cocktail. The best part is the audience gets to sample the whole competition so who is the real winner? This event is free to attend but must be 21 and up to participate – no buckaroos can drink this firewater.

Handmade for the Hungry at GVA: Wednesday, September 13th, 2017 – 6:00pm to 7:30pm
Glynn Visual Arts supports our local food bank, America’s Second Harvest, through our pottery program in which we offer classes for students to come in & make a bowl then donate it to the Handmade for the Hungry/Empty Bowl Project.
After the bowls are made and donated, the project culminates with a soup dinner at GVA in which individuals may come in & buy a hand made bowl to take home & receive a soup dinner & all the fixin’s. All proceeds from sales of the bowls & dinner are donated to America’s Second Harvest. It’s fun to make the bowls & fun to come to the dinner & see all the creativity in our community, knowing it’s for a great cause!

Be the first to the green! The Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce’s 32nd annual Four-Man Scramble will be held on Friday, September 15 at the beautiful King & Prince Golf Course. Teams consist of four players with any combination of handicaps. Handicaps or approximate average score to be included on entry form. Mulligan tickets will be available at the course prior to play and will be used for door prize drawings. As always, the 50/50 Ball Drop will occur before the shotgun start. Coastal Stewards Workshop | Georgia Shrimp: Friday 15th to Saturday 16th, September 2017
This workshop, for members of the public 18 or older, focuses on the economic importance of the shrimping industry and the connection between the success of the industry and the health of coastal ecosystems. Music is in the air and by the sea as Golden Isles Arts & Humanities gets ready for a great summertime concert series – Sounds by the Sea. A variety of musical offerings will fill Neptune Park from May – September showcasing the best local and regional musicians. Local favorite Michael Hulett will star in the final concert of the season on Sept. 17 with his captivating vocals and saxophone.
Sounds by the Sea is presented by Golden Isles Arts and Humanities at Neptune Park on St. Simons Island directly behind the Casino building. The concerts are held on select Sundays, for maximum breezes and bug-free comfort by the ocean. The concerts take place from 7-9 p.m. and guests are encouraged to bring a picnic supper and a lawn chair or blanket to relax on. Admission to Sounds by the Sea, payable at the gate the night of each show, is only $10 for adults. Children ages 6 to 12 are $5, and under 6 years old are free.

The class is structured around a 4-course prep and dine outline. Giving each couple a chance to learn all the ins and outs of the meal so that they can recreate it at home together. Art Under the Oaks: Saturday 23rd to Sunday 24th, September 2017
This September, Glynn Visual Arts celebrates its 47th year hosting this beautiful Fine Arts & Crafts Festival now known as Art Under the Oaks. True to tradition, artists will hail from around the region representing a wide range of mediums. 70 artists and craftsmen will present a variety of original two-dimensional art, sculpture, photography, jewelry, textiles, ceramics, wood, metal & glass – all available for purchase. While exploring the show, visitors can keep an eye out for the artists who are awarded ribbons for their outstanding work in their medium.
This festival is a colorful event featuring something for everyone. Attendees will enjoy the opportunity to meet the artists & connect with them about their artwork. This makes the ownership or giving of a handcrafted piece much more meaningful because of the personal connection between the customer & the artist.
