Glynn Visual Arts Presents “Water Works”: May 2nd to June 27th, 2016
Water, water everywhere! Here in the Golden Isles we are fortunate to be surrounded by beautiful water at every turn. Glynn Visual Arts is pleased to announce our exhibition, Water Works, highlighting the theme of water, in either the medium and/or the subject or feel of the art work. This exhibition features watercolors as uniquely used by three specially invited regional watercolorists, all with a unique take on this captivating medium. The exhibition also includes two invited 3-D glass artists as well as GVA member watercolorists juried into the show.
This exhibition will take place in both GVA galleries. GVA’s main location at 106 Island Drive, Saint Simons Island will feature the work of the three invited watercolorists, Mary O. Smith, Annette Crosby, and Dan Goad along with 3-D glass artists, Thomas and Nancy Linek. The gallery at the Welcome Center at 529 Beachview Drive will feature the work of juried GVA member watercolorists.
The exhibition runs from May 2, 2016 – June 27, 2016. The opening reception will be Thursday, May 5th at the main GVA location at 106 Island Drive from 5:30pm – 7:00 pm.
Bonnie Rabert Art Exhibit: June 3rd to 25th, 2016
This exhibit features artist Bonnie Rabert’s impressionistic and colorful one-of-a-kind pieces that sometimes expand into mixed media to tell a story. Free opening reception during First Friday events on June 3, 5:00 – 8:00 pm.
The Ritz Gallery is open Wednesday – Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saturdays, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, or by appointment.
Friday Fun Days at the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum: June 3rd, 10th, 17th, & 24th, 2016
Every visitor to the Lighthouse is an explorer! Come see and touch history by climbing 129 steps to the top of the lighthouse and exploring the interactive galleries in the Lighthouse Museum. There’s so much to discover!
The Coastal Georgia Historical Society presents Friday Fun Days! Every Friday in June, children under 12 are admitted free of charge, and we’ll offer crafts, games and activities designed for family fun. All children must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older. Events will take place June 3, 10, 17 and 24.

Georgia Sea Island Festival: June 4th to 5th, 2016
For nearly thirty years the Georgia Sea Island Festival on St. Simons Island has celebrated the African American musical traditions, crafts and food of the coastal barrier islands. This year’s festival will be held June 4 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm and on June 5 from noon to 6:00 pm under the live oaks at Gascoigne Bluff Park.
Nationally known and world renowned, the Georgia Sea Island Singers have been a highlight of the weekend since the festival on St. Simons Island was first organized in 1977 the 1980s by original members of the group Mabel Hillary and Bessie Jones.
Donations will be welcomed for the restoration of the historic Harrington schoolhouse, built c. 1920. Once restored, the Harrington School will serve as a museum to the island’s African American heritage.

National Trails Day at Cannon’s Point: June 4th, 2016
We will celebrate with people across the country in observing the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day® on Saturday, June 4. The celebration will feature guided and self-guided exploration of the 608-acre Cannon’s Point Preserve, which will be open from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. Guided tours will include a history walk and a photography walk.
7 am – Photography hike. Meet volunteer guide Marti Jeffers at Taylor’s Fish Camp near parking area. Walk will extend to north end.
9 am – History hike. Meet volunteer guide Myrna Crook at Taylor’s Fish Camp near parking area. Learn about Native American life, Plantation-Era life and see historic ruins.
9:30 am – Marine Exploration. Meet volunteer Susan Shipman at the non-motorized boat launch for marine exploration. Learn about native wildlife in our marshes and tidal creeks.
10:30 am – Scavenger hunt. Meet at Taylor’s Fish camp for this family-friendly activity.
10 am – 2 pm – Southern area tours. Meet at Taylor’s Fish Camp near parking area. Learn about wildlife, the Live Oak rotunda, some history. Led by Preserve Manager Stephanie Knox and various volunteers on the hour every hour.
Cannon’s Point Preserve is a primitive wilderness experience. All visitors should bring their own water, bug spray and snacks. Wear appropriate clothing (long pants, long sleeves, close-toed shoes). There are no pets allowed on the Preserve. Limited restrooms available in Taylor’s Fish Camp near the parking area. Additional restrooms located at Frederica Park which is one mile south on Lawrence Road. Access to the north end is limited to bikes and pedestrians only. Take only pictures, leave only footprints. Normal hours of operation at Cannon’s Point Preserve are Saturday-Monday, 9 am to 3 pm.

Colonial Cooking Demonstration: June 4th, 11th, 18th & 25th, 2016
Every Saturday in June, come to Fort Frederica, walk to the town site and smell what’s cooking. Learn how the settlers adapted both new foods and cooking methods to help them survive in the infant colony of Georgia. This program is free and open to the public.
National Trails Day History Hike: June 4th, 2016
Explore over 200 years of history with a two mile walk through Hofwyl-Broadfield’s past. This walk will feature the ruins of original plantation house, rice fields, and rice mill, area of old slave settlement, plantation road, old spring and gardens and more. Attendees will also be able to take part in regularly scheduled guided tours of the plantation house. Walk will be about 2 miles in length. Bring water and insect repellant. Wear shoes comfortable for walking. COST: $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for youth (6-17), children 5 and under are free.

Walk with a Ranger at Fort Frederica: June 5th, 12th, 19th & 26th, 2016
Every Sunday in June, Fort Frederica National Monument hosts “Walk with a Ranger,” where the stories of the 18th Century British Settlement are brought to life. Join the ranger led tour and immerse your imagination as you travel back in time to 1736. The program is approximately 45 minutes. This program is free and open to the public.
Rhythm on the River featuring Michaele & The Ambiguous: June 5th, 2016

Southern Grown Festival: Thursday 9th to Sunday 12th, June 2016
In this celebration of all things Southern – food, drink and music! – Southern Grown 2016 builds on Sea Island’s 88-year history of creating exceptional experiences. Southern Grown Concert at The Lodge, 6:30 pm, Gates open at 5:30 pm
The highlight of the weekend occurs on Saturday night, when Grammy award-winning Tedeschi Trucks Band takes the stage for an oceanfront performance on the lawn of The Lodge at Sea Island. Preceding this performance will be musical openers by Dumpstaphunk, one of the funkiest bands to arise from New Orleans, and two-time Grammy award-winner Jason Isbell, a singer-songwriter and guitarist from Alabama. As the sun sets over the Atlantic Ocean, guests can sample selections from renowned guest chefs while being serenaded by a variety of Southern tunes.
Musket Drills at Fort Frederica: June 11th, 18th & 25th, 2016
Join Heron’s Company for their musket drills and canon exercises throughout the day at Fort Frederica National Monument. Drills take place from 9:30 am – noon and 1:00 – 4:00 pm. This program is free and open to the public.
Sounds by the Sea Featuring Jaime Renee & The Walkers: June 12th, 2016
On Sunday, June 12, Jaime Renee & The Walkers will play at the Neptune Park on St. Simons Island. The concert begins at 7 pm. Jamie Renee & The Walkers is a four-piece band featuring ukulele, bass, drums and saxophone that offers a huge variety of music – pop, classic rock, R&B/Soul, country, jazz and blues. Jamie Renee who fronts the band is also an incredible songwriter and is sure to do a few of her original tunes. The band has been together for about a year and is a popular feature at area resorts including Sea Island, King & Prince and the Westin on Jekyll. Their performance at Sounds by the Sea will be filled with songs that folks know and love as well as some high-energy dance tunes.
For over 25 years, Golden Isles Arts & Humanities has been bringing the community great outdoor summer concerts with Jazz in the Park, the original outdoor concert series. Last year was the first Sounds by the Sea season which saw a mix of musical styles – something for everyone. Says Heather Heath, Executive Director, “We had some great bands last summer and we are looking forward to another outstanding season of music. And you can’t beat the great location, cool ocean breezes and sense of community that makes for a great summer evening.”
Sounds by the Sea is presented by Golden Isles Arts and Humanities at Neptune Park on St. Simons Island directly behind the Casino building. The concerts are held on select Sundays, for maximum breezes and bug-free comfort by the ocean. The concerts take place from 7-9 p.m. and guests are encouraged to bring a picnic supper and a lawn chair or blanket to relax on. The season is sponsored by Atlantic National Bank (print media sponsor), Golden Isles Broadcasting (radio sponsor) and The Island Inn (hotel sponsor.) Parker’s Convenience Stores are sponsoring the Memorial Day Weekend concert and Jenkins Nissan is sponsoring the September concert; opportunities are available for other local businesses to sponsor individual concerts.
Admission to Sounds by the Sea, payable at the gate the night of each show, is only $10 for adults. Children ages 6 to 12 are $5, and under 6 years old are free.

A Little Light Music Concert featuring Soul Fish: June 19th, 2016
Every summer, residents and visitors gather on the oceanfront lawn beneath the Lighthouse for the sounds, sea breezes, friends and fun of the Little Light Music Summer Concert Series. We have lined up the best series in years with seasoned, chart-topping musicians who are sure to get you out of your seat and dancing! Concerts are from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and tickets are $12 for adults; children under 12 and Keepers of the Light are admitted free of charge. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Museum Store or at the gate the evening of the concert.
