Serving Aces at The King and Prince

The King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort may be known for its luxurious accommodations and gorgeous view of the Atlantic Ocean, but the available recreation and activities must not be overlooked. Some of the exciting activities include golfing at the world renowned King and Prince Golf Course, dolphin and sunset boat tours, and romantic horse rides along the beach. But, if you are looking to spend your leisure time playing tennis, then the resort’s Har-Tru tennis courts are where you need to be.

The Har-Tru tennis courts are complimentary for The King and Prince guests and feature a natural St. Simons Island backdrop, mild year-round weather, and a professional athlete on staff to help improve your stroke. Pride Evans is a seasoned tennis professional with over 25 years of teaching and instructional experience. He is a member of the Georgia Professional Tennis Association Hall of Fame and was voted the Georgia Director and Educator of the Year.  Pride offers lessons for private guests, groups, team coaching and getaways, and corporate outings. For more information on spending your day at the Har-Tru tennis courts, please visit our website.

Oceanfront King Hotel Room

Hi Everyone! My name is Colleen Ruska and I am the Reservations Supervisor here at The King and Prince.  I have seven years of hospitality experience-specifically working in Historic Hotels in New York and Georgia and I am happy to call St. Simons Island my home.

As the Reservations supervisor, I have come to know our beautiful accommodations and the Island inside and out. I truly believe that we have offerings for everyone’s taste and budget. The resort has almost 200 rooms ranging from our Standard Oglethorpe rooms all the way up to our Governor’s Suite and the Resort Residences and Villas. With our picture perfect location –right on the beach and our proximity to the pier village area, (less than a mile away!) our Resort is the perfect place to enjoy a getaway, kick back and relax “on island time”

Our most economical rooms are the Standard rooms, most of which have two queen beds and are simply appointed with comfortable furnishings and a small kitchenette. The Resort View and Partial Ocean View rooms are mid-priced rooms located both in the Historic Building and in the Oleander Building. The Partial Ocean view rooms in Oleander are one of my favorite room types because of the location, nice view and size of the rooms. Because the rooms are so spacious, these rooms are also appealing for families.

The view from our Ocean Front rooms cannot be beat. What could be better than watching the sun rise over the Atlantic and watching the Dolphins play in the water from the comfort of your own balcony! The Cabana rooms are by far our most requested room type. These ground floor Ocean Front rooms have an unobstructed view of the ocean and they are so close that you can fall asleep listening to the waves crashing on the shore. Rooms in the Oceanfront Building sit behind our main pool. The location gives you a great view and easy access to the pools and the beach. They are our most recently renovated rooms and feature a contemporary décor.

I could say so much more about our room types and I have not even had a chance to write about our Resort Residences and Beach Villas! I hope this blog has given you some insight into our accommodations. Please be sure to check back in the future for updates and more information about our rooms.

Hampton Club

The Hampton ClubOur new blog is exciting for me to be a part of.  My name is Rick Mattox, General Manager & Golf Director at The Hampton Club on St. Simons Island.  The King & Prince opened the course in August 1989.  I was fortunate to join then in March of 1990 and have been here ever since.  Through a great deal of preparation we are currently undergoing a restoration of the original design by the architect Joe Lee.  Joe designed over 275 courses with the majority in the southeast and some overseas.  We selected Billy Fuller of Billy Fuller Golf Design to oversee the project; he came highly recommended as a restoration specialist.

Closing date was April 1, 2009 with a scheduled re-open date of October 1, 2009.  With “A Quality Golf Experience” as our mission statement, we sought to make our Hotel Guests and Members feel important to us by arranging several area courses for them to play during this time.  My staff handles all of the arrangements and is on location to assist with the group bookings.   Offering outstanding service is important to me, so I wanted that to continue even though our course is not open.

Hampton has 4 holes out in the marsh, connected by 800 feet of bridgework, which take your breath away on the back nine.  With over 95% of the people who play here saying, “this is the best golf experience I have ever had”, our goal is to put it back for the next generation to enjoy.

The restoration includes replacing greens with Mini-Verde the newest in the hybrid family.  Our tees, fairways, and rough will be Celebration, a new Bermuda grass that can handle shade well.    Our bunkers will be reshaped and grassed with Empire Zoysia.  Finally we have a collar of Tif-Sport to give us four types of grasses.   It will be a real “WOW” factor to see when you come to visit our hotel and play the course.  Whether it’s your first time or seventh time, you do not want to miss it.

We will update you on the blog, but you can go to to view progress as work continues.  It is changing everyday!

St. Simons Island Activities

The King and Prince - St. Simons Island, Georgia

The King and Prince – St. Simons Island, Georgia

“What is there to do in the area?” you ask.  So much that I do not know where to begin.  So I’ll start with a really long sentence; boat rides and casino cruises, national monuments and historical lighthouses, unique gift shops and antique stores, art galleries and museums, golf and fishing, really cool 4-person bike rentals and Summer Waves Water park, trolley tours and a dirt track speedway, helicopter  and shrimp boat rides, skeet shooting and horseback riding on the beach and much, much more.

The village area of St. Simons Island is the center of activity and is the perfect blend of Americana and southern charm.  Once you go, you’ll understand.  At one end is a park with baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball court and the wildest trees for a vacation photo.  Numerous shops and restaurants lead you to the waterfront, where a children’s playground and fishing pier are always great fun!  Dolphins can be seen swimming here, if you haven’t seen them yet from the swings at the resort.  I have two boys, ages 8 ½ and 7 and they just love this park.  The historic Lighthouse is here, as well as the new swimming pool and miniature golf course (both scheduled to open before Memorial Day).  Relax under the shade of giant oak trees (more photo ops) and enjoy the people-watching; everyone always seems happy here, if you live here or just visiting.  The Jazz in the Park series are also scheduled here, as well as Art Shows and Antique Shows.

Adjacent to the Resort is another great children’s playground in Massengale Park, where sprawling oak trees shade the play area.  Fort Frederica also offers adult and children’s activities, including an archeological digging for the future Indiana Jones’.  My boys loved it!  For history-lovers, the island and surrounding area offer numerous historical sites, plantations and other forts.

For the adventurous families and adults, the island offers some really fun things to do.  The Lady Jane shrimp boat goes out in the Golden Isles waters and drops the nets for shrimp and lots of other cool sea creatures.  The crew will boil the shrimp on board, for the freshest, most delicious shrimp.  More great photo ops here.  The captain and crew are very entertaining and this is a memory you will cherish for some time.
