Set in September 1934. Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world famous, Tito Morelli, Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as Othello. The star arrives late and, through a hilarious series of mishaps, is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead. In a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Morelli’s Othello costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably, but Morelli comes to and gets into his other costume ready to perform. Now two Othellos are running around in costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo. This madcap, screwball comedy is guaranteed to leave audiences teary-eyed with laughter. All performances are Saturdays at 8 p.m. / Sundays at 3 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes prior to curtain – Reserved seating available. $25 PER PERSON (desserts and beverages included)

Bring it to the event and the staff will provide technical assistance to get you up and running! In the event of inclement weather or cloudy skies, Dr. John Hewitt will give a more in-depth presentation inside the Visitor Center.
And finally, for those amateur photographers out there, if you end up capturing an amazing night sky view from one of these festivals or night sky programs, we encourage you to submit your photo at Share the Experience (sharetheexperience.com), the official federal recreation lands photo contest, now through December 31, 2016. There is even a Night Skies category!

It is rare to find musicians together so long, rarer still with such profound successes. Their music lives in the hearts of generations of dedicated fans and continues to inspire young musicians. Cassina’s tenth Annual Garden Walk again celebrates the horticultural beauty of the St. Simons coastal area. It offers an opportunity for visitors to explore and enjoy a seldom seen group of six of the Island’s most inspiring private gardens. The name of the tour was selected to recognize St. Simons Island’s cultural heritage by spotlighting the tabby slave cabins, circa early 1800’s, on historic Gascoigne Bluff and their magnificent setting among the ancient oaks covered with tillandsia, or Spanish moss. The cabins are maintained by Cassina Garden Club, Inc. Proceeds from the Tabby & Tillandsia Garden Walk are used for the preservation and maintenance of our historic tabby cabins and the surrounding grounds.
Our Special Interest Stop will again be ACE Garden Center, which will have plants featured on the Garden Walk and other great gardening ideas.

Advance tickets may be purchased at ACE Garden Center, G.J. Ford Bookshop and St. Simons Drug Store, on St Simons Island, or Cunningham Jewelers and Gentlemen’s Outfitters, in Brunswick.garden_walk_0

Sounds by the Sea Featuring The Phil Morrison-Ken Trimmins Jazz Collective: Sunday, May 22nd, 2016 – 7:00pm – 9:00pm

Golden Isles Arts & Humanities is kicking off its great summertime concert series, Sounds by the Sea, on Sunday, May 22 with The Phil Morrison-Ken Trimmins Jazz Collective. The music starts at 7 p.m. by the sea at Neptune Park, St Simons Island.

“We are thrilled to have The Phil Morrison-Ken Trimmins Jazz Collective as our opening concert headliner,” says Heather Heath, executive director, Golden Isles Arts & Humanities. “They are perennial audience favorites and created the amazing Tribute to Duke Ellington concert that packed the Ritz Theatre in last year. Concert goers are in for a real treat.”

Morrison, who calls the Golden Isles home, is a well-known Boston-born bassist and composer. He has worked with such major artists as Dizzy Gillespie, bluesman T-Bone Walker, vocalist Gloria Lynne and French horn player John Clark. He subsequently joined the trio of pianist/singer Freddy Cole, Nat’s youngest brother, with whom he worked for about five years. During that time, he frequently toured Brazil. That Brazilian influence is reflected in many of Phil’s original compositions.

Trimmins completed a distinguished career with the United States Air Force Band program, which included serving as director of operations for nine touring ensembles and as musical director and bandleader for three Air Force jazz bands. He has a bachelor’s degree in music education from Valdosta State University, a master’s degree in trumpet performance from Mercer University and a doctorate in classical trumpet performance from Florida State University. He is currently the concert band director and an assistant professor at Albany State University.

Sounds by the Sea is presented by Golden Isles Arts and Humanities at Neptune Park on St. Simons Island directly behind the Casino building. The concerts are held on select Sundays and take place from 7-9 p.m. and guests are encouraged to bring a picnic supper and a lawn chair or blanket to relax on.

A season pass for Sounds by the Sea will be available through May 22 and are only $35. Season passes are also available for children ages 6 to 12 for only $15.
