SAMBASSAMBAS by Raymond Dumas III Exhibit: Monday, July 24th to Monday, August 21st, 2017

Glynn Visual Arts welcomes home a Golden Isles native son, Raymond Dumas III known to local friends and family as “Rusty”. GVA is proud to present “SAMBAS”, a retrospective exhibition with painting works by Raymond Dumas III from 1991 – 2017. Raymond studied Art at Cambridge University in England, the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI, Cooper Union in New York and at the School of Visual Arts, in New York where he earned his Bachelors of Fine Arts in 1995. He later continued his studies to earn a Masters of Fine Arts at Yale University School of Art in 1997. Since then, Raymond has worked extensively in the film, television, print, and advertising industries as a production illustrator and designer. He is a scholar and historian of Nigerian Afrobeat music. He has published articles in Wax Poetics Magazine on Afrobeat music, and Published Photographs in Purple-Fashion Magazine. He has lived in the United States, Mexico and Spain. “My painting impulses come like heat lightning in the St. Simons Island night. They are clouds that burst with incandescent light, revealing a pattern, before closing, only to explode moments later in a new form. The exhibition is called “Sambas” because my art comes as a musical light and rhythm.”, said Dumas. “Some of Dumas’ paintings in this collection range in styles from the quiet and still color fields of Mark Rothko, some include energetic, lines and shapes in an almost grafitti-esque style, others are reminiscent of lines and dots on a map, with repetition suggesting a rhythm of place and convergence.”, said Susan Ryles, Executive Director, Glynn Visual Arts. For more info, call 912-638-8770 or click here.

Art in the ParkArt in the Park: Saturday, April 1st to Sunday, April 2nd, 2017

Spring arrives in style this April as Glynn Visual Arts hosts their 24th annual Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft festival. Over 70 talented artists & skilled crafts people from around the region display an impressive & eclectic collection of handmade artwork. Attendees will enjoy a wide variety of 2 dimensional art, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, photography, textiles, wood, metal & glass. Homegrown beauty products, botanicals & gourmet goodies are also available to delight the senses. A great selection of food vendors serving freshly prepared eats will be available as well. Music, kid’s craft activities & a bicycle treasure hunt, known as “Pedal for Treasure” make this a fun, family friendly event. This festival is held in the beautiful live oak covered Postell Park in the heart of the Pier village, just steps from the ocean on St Simons Island, GA.

Find out how it is made! Throughout the weekend blacksmithing demonstrations will be given on site by a talented family of artists. Attendees will also enjoy the opportunity to meet the artists & connect with them about their artwork. “Shoppers are given the chance to support small businesses, meet the artists & even learn how their new handmade piece of art was made. This makes the ownership or giving of a handcrafted piece truly special”, notes Hannah Roberts, GVA’s Festival Director.

This festival has something for everyone, including the youngest of visitors. The Kid’s “Creation Station” celebrates the smallest artists with free craft activities.

Glynn Visual Arts will again host “Pedal for Treasure” on Sunday afternoon, a bicycle scavenger hunt looking for local visual art. Individuals or groups of two or three are provided clues and a map for a $10 entry fee. The route is an easy loop near the Village area. Last year’s participants were enthusiastic about their adventure – and competitive too! Prizes were awarded for the most correct answers, the best team name, and the best time to finish. All are encouraged to come early for lunch in the park and shop the festival before and after the scavenger hunt.
