hofwyl_ghosts__legends_3Ghosts and Legends of Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Walking Tours: Saturday, June 10th to Saturday, July 22nd, 2017

Take an eerie journey back in time at coastal Georgia’s most haunted rice plantation. As you walk beneath centuries old Live Oaks, explore the out-buildings on the plantation and a lantern tour of the main house you will hear tales of recent ghostly encounters, plantation folklore and the rich but tragic history of the Low County rice fields.

The tour will be approximately one mile in length and last for one and a half hours. It is suggested that visitors wear shoes comfortable for walking. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to make sure you have time to get to the tour. Don’t forget your bug-spray. Reservations Requested.

Tours will start at 7:00 pm and end at 8:30 pm. Admission: $15. Event Dates: July 5, July 14, July 22.

Join us for the opening reception of the Big Photo Show Thursday, June 29th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm (Awards Presentation at 6:15 PM). Refreshments will be served. Guests at the reception can vote for the “Peoples’ Choice”. Gallery is open Monday – Friday 9 AM – 5 PM and some Saturdays. Closed Sundays.

Prints are presented by award winning photographers, serious amateurs and more advanced members. Photographs are grouped into four categories: (1) Nature; (2) People (includes portraits); (3) Landscape; and, (4) Open. Prints are priced for sale and a portion of each sale benefits Glynn Visual Arts.

The show will be judged by prominent photography experts: David Veater – art instructor at Glynn Academy, Jeff LeMieux – Associate Professor of Arts and Humanities at the College of Coastal Georgia; Lynda Gallagher – Owner of the SoGlo Gallery in historic downtown Brunswick, and manager of art displays at the Southeast Georgia Hospital – Brunswick Campus. fourthofjulySt. Simons Island 4th of July Sunshine Festival: Saturday 1st to Tuesday 4th, July 2017

The Annual St. Simons Island Sunshine Festival held in the Pier Village on St. Simons has been an island tradition for over 60 years. The family fun starts this year on Saturday, July 2nd and runs through Monday, July 4th.

Fireworks: The fireworks display begins at 9:00pm. on the evening of the July 4th. So bring your chair and meet your friends in oceanfront Neptune Park and sit back and watch the show.

Sunshine Arts & Crafts Show: This Sunshine Festival features an Arts & Crafts Show that highlights some of the region’s best artists and crafters whose wares include painting, pottery, jewelry, woodcraft, photography, garden art and more! The show starts Friday, July 1st and runs through Tuesday, July 4th at Postell Park.

Sunshine Festival 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run: Bring the family and participate together in a 1 mile fun run and 5K race on July 4th. The 5k race starts at 7:00am  and the 1 mile fun run begins at 8:00am. Start/Finish/Ceremony for both races will be at Mallery Park on St. Simons Island. (Mallery Park is just north of Kings Way on Mallery Street). Race Day Registration and Packet Pick Up: July 3rd at St. Simons Presbyterian Church from 2:00pm – 6:00pm. Race day registration begins at 6:30am at Mallery Park. Event Sponsors: The Sunshine Festival is sponsored by the Pier Village Association and proceeds from the festival are used for the betterment of the Pier Village and its parks. Some of the projects partially funded by PVA include public restroom facilities, grilling stations in the Neptune Park, extended street lighting on Beachview Drive, and landscaping of the parkways.

Taking the stage again this year for our early Independence Day concert is The Accidentals! The Accidentals are the University of Georgia’s only all-male a cappella group. A 42 year tradition of the South’s University of Georgia, the Accidentals are a motivated and talented group of male vocalists and students. From performing at locations such as Snowshoe Mountain, WV (annual ski retreat in December) to New York City, as well as more local areas such as Atlanta and North Carolina, the Accidentals are a well-practiced and professional group. Brunswick’s Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration takes place in Mary Ross Waterfront Park in Downtown Brunswick starting at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4th. There will be free watermelon slices for everyone, music in the air, and plenty of old-fashioned games like sack races, water balloon tossing, and hula hoop contests, along with fun prizes for the winners.

The evening will begin with a stirring rendition of The Star Spangled Banner sung by local singer Annie Akins and some of the Artists and Mentors of the Golden Isles Penguin Project. Then the games will begin and all ages can participate in the fun. The First Baptist Church of Brunswick will be lending a helping hand to the celebration and will also have a variety of fun activities for folks to participate in.

Local organizations, Heather House and the City of Brunswick Police Department C.O.P. program will have hot dogs, hamburgers, sodas and other tasty treats will be available for purchase. P O Sound and Lighting Rentals will serve as the DJ for the evening – providing fun tunes to hula hoop and dance to as the everyone waits for the sun to set.

Then at dark, a spectacular fireworks display explodes over the East River to the strains of patriotic music. It’s good, clean, old-fashioned fun for the community and visitors alike brought to you by the City of Brunswick and Golden Isles Arts and Humanities. Site Manager Steve Theus is pleased to announce the commemoration of the 275th anniversary of the Battles of Gully Hole Creek and Bloody Marsh on Saturday, July 8th from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Bloody Marsh unit of Fort Frederica National Monument. The program will consist of a presentation and musket firing to mark the anniversary of the decisive battles that served as a pivotal point in the conflict between Britain and Spain.

It is the winner of the Will D. Campbell Award for Creative Nonfiction. Summer Classic Film Festival: Friday 14th to Sunday 16th, July 2017

Summer Classic Movies at the Ritz is transforming into the Summer Classic Film Festival, a full weekend of classic films that will feature the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock and his favorite leading lady, Grace Kelly. The festival will take place July 14-16, 2017 with all three of the Hitchcock-Kelly films and other special events.

  • On Friday, July 14, the Summer Classic Film Festival will kick off with Dial M for Murder, the first of the Hitchcock-Kelly collaboration. Preceding the screening will be a talk about the director and a delicious meal prepared by Indigo Coastal Shanty.
  • On Saturday, July 15 at 4 pm, Mel Brooks’ delightfully silly parody, High Anxiety will be screened. Filmgoers can then take a break in one of downtown Brunswick’s participating restaurants for a special film meal and return to the Ritz by 7 pm to catch the highly suspenseful Rear Window.
  • And on Sunday afternoon beginning at 2:30 pm, light refreshments will be served along with a short documentary on legendary costume designer Edith Head followed by the final film in the festival, To Catch A Thief.

In the introduction of his newly published book, Our Lost Heritage: Ten Things You Did Not Know About James Edward Oglethorpe, The Founder of Georgia, Hodges writes “Rather than a journey of discovery, I see this work as more of a journey of re-discovery. He visits the Guild to talk about Cosmic Hotel, a story about Sandeep Sanghavi, the mixed-race son of an Indian businesswoman and a famous American astronomer, who lives a nomadic albeit mundane life traveling the country with his mother’s hotel consulting firm. Glynn Visual Arts supports our local food bank, America’s Second Harvest, through our pottery program in which we offer classes for students to come in & make a bowl then donate it to the Handmade for the Hungry/Empty Bowl Project.

After the bowls are made and donated, the project culminates with a soup dinner at GVA in which individuals may come in & buy a hand made bowl to take home & receive a soup dinner & all the fixin’s. All proceeds from sales of the bowls & dinner are donated to America’s Second Harvest. It’s fun to make the bowls & fun to come to the dinner & see all the creativity in our community, knowing it’s for a great cause!

Go behind the scenes during Georgia coast’s sea turtle nesting season with Catherine Ridley of the SSI Sea Turtle Project! We’ll meet at the Coast Guard Beach beach access boardwalk for an interactive beach night hike, where we’ll discuss loggerhead natural history, explore the beach at night in search of hatching turtles, and see how turtles nests are protected on Georgia’s beaches. You’ll learn the many ways you can help protect these amazing animals, explore bioluminescence and nocturnal science, and discover your own natural night vision. $10 members and $15 non-members.
